#### Pythagoras' theorem test x2

These resources are a sample from a collection of short tests on the application of Pythagoras’ theorem. All the tests are quite short (3/4 questions, so 5-10mins max). I created them so that I was able to test my classes more regularly on topics at different points through the year - each test is similar enough so that classes hopefully improve at the “standard” questions but there is also some variety in the later questions in each test and a progression in difficulty as you go through the tests. In the full set of 18 tests there are 5 tests designed to be done with a calculator, 13 tests to be done without a calculator. The questions include: 1.Finding the longest/shorter side of a right-angled triangle 2.Determining whether a triangle is right-angled 3.Finding the distance between 2 points 4.Using Pythagoras’ theorem in isosceles triangles, rectangles, squares etc 5.Using Pythagoras’ theorem in 3D 6.Using Pythagoras’ theorem where side lengths are given as surds All tests come with fully-worked solutions which makes them easy to mark. #### Pythagoras Treasure Map

I did this as a review at the end of a week teaching Pythagoras to a middle set year 10. I got them to split into teams and set it as a challenge to see who could get the correct list of destinations first. the questions are coloured with hypotenuse, then shorter side and finally worded questions. (no 3D). The map has extra symbols on so they can’t just use the triangle letter! As it was a review the activity took around 20 - 30 minutes and kept the students engaged. This is a problem solving activity/worksheet that tests multiple levels of understanding related to the topic of area of regular polygons. They are high-level problems to test the most able, although a hint/formula sheet is included to help “differentiate down”. Also included is a differentiated/scaffolded sheet to help break the questions down, too for lower ability. Overall use of surds, Pythagoras Theorem and area formula for polygons are tested. Answers are provided in both surd format and to 2 decimals places.

A revision activity that can be used for KS3 or foundation GCSE pupils. Can be implemented in lots of ways. I ask pupils to get into pairs, take turns rolling two dice to form a co-ordinate and attempt to solve the corresponding question. Pupil put their initials on problems they have solved and after 30-45 minutes stop and count who has solved the most. Very engaging for year 10 and 11 foundation GCSE pupils. If you haven’t heard your students talking about Fortnite then where have you been? 45 million people play the shooter game Fortnite and I can’t stop the kids I teach from talking about it. This activity incorporates lots of different concepts: Ratios/Scales Bearings Speed, distance, time Pythagoras Area problem solving Edit and remove questions as you want. #### Trig-Sta 18 - two nets based on latest World Cup Telstar, with trig reminders as logos

I was so intrigued by Matt Parker on You Tube (Geometry of Footballs) that I thought I would see if I could model the latest World Cup ball, the Telstar 18 - these are the results. You have a one sheet one piece net and a DeLuxe 6 sheet model. The shoe company’s logo that usually adorns these balls is based on a 30-60-90 RAT and so I thought some revision notes on Pythag and Trig might work. I’ve included some design notes on the shoe company’s logo in the ppt. So far in the Platonic League, cubes ruled until 1970 - when the Telstar a truncated icosahedron held sway until Germany 2006 with a dodecahedron, then South Africa 2010 with an octahedron. But the cubes fought back in Brazil and now Russia. Tetrahedron anyone?
