Pythagoras' theorem test x2

Pythagoras' theorem test x2

These resources are a sample from a collection of short tests on the application of Pythagoras’ theorem. All the tests are quite short (3/4 questions, so 5-10mins max). I created them so that I was able to test my classes more regularly on topics at different points through the year - each test is similar enough so that classes hopefully improve at the “standard” questions but there is also some variety in the later questions in each test and a progression in difficulty as you go through the tests. In the full set of 18 tests there are 5 tests designed to be done with a calculator, 13 tests to be done without a calculator. The questions include: 1.Finding the longest/shorter side of a right-angled triangle 2.Determining whether a triangle is right-angled 3.Finding the distance between 2 points 4.Using Pythagoras’ theorem in isosceles triangles, rectangles, squares etc 5.Using Pythagoras’ theorem in 3D 6.Using Pythagoras’ theorem where side lengths are given as surds All tests come with fully-worked solutions which makes them easy to mark. This means that the tests could also be used as a revision resource for students. The full set of 18 tests is available here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/pythagoras-theorem-test-x18-11922960

Multiple choice 20 - The distance between a pair of coordinates

Multiple choice 20 - The distance between a pair of coordinates

Another little activity for AFL, revision, starter or a plenary. Works well with mini whiteboards and adaptable to voting systems. Can easily be printed off for class use. Aimed at KS3/4 and KS5 multiple choice activity solving problems involving finding the length of a line segment between coordinates. Hope you find it useful Please leave feedback

Pythagoras Treasure Map

Pythagoras Treasure Map

I did this as a review at the end of a week teaching Pythagoras to a middle set year 10. I got them to split into teams and set it as a challenge to see who could get the correct list of destinations first. the questions are coloured with hypotenuse, then shorter side and finally worded questions. (no 3D). The map has extra symbols on so they can’t just use the triangle letter! As it was a review the activity took around 20 - 30 minutes and kept the students engaged. Answers are (not in any order) House, town, maze,Fish and chips, pond, cave, mountain, fair, dragon, cafe, forest, park and beach

Pythagoras-Differentiated-Grades 3,4,5,6

The presentation includes: Lesson objectives Two slides with animations about Pythagoras Theorem Slides with MWBs Activities Climb the ladder - I usually give students about 6 min to climb up the ladder as much as they can. It defines what level they will start from afterwards Differentiated worksheets with answers - first level is Grade 3/4, second level is Grade 4/5 and third level is Grade 5/6. There is a word document with the worksheets but I usually print from the presentation and I only change the printer properties to two pages per one and every two slides will be printed off on one A4 sheet. Enjoy the whole lesson presentation!

Regular Polygon Area Problems

Regular Polygon Area Problems

This is a problem solving activity/worksheet that tests multiple levels of understanding related to the topic of area of regular polygons. They are high-level problems to test the most able, although a hint/formula sheet is included to help “differentiate down”. Also included is a differentiated/scaffolded sheet to help break the questions down, too for lower ability. Overall use of surds, Pythagoras Theorem and area formula for polygons are tested. Answers are provided in both surd format and to 2 decimals places.

Roll-a-topic GCSE foundation Geometry Revision

Roll-a-topic GCSE foundation Geometry Revision

A revision activity that can be used for KS3 or foundation GCSE pupils. Can be implemented in lots of ways. I ask pupils to get into pairs, take turns rolling two dice to form a co-ordinate and attempt to solve the corresponding question. Pupil put their initials on problems they have solved and after 30-45 minutes stop and count who has solved the most. Very engaging for year 10 and 11 foundation GCSE pupils. If you use this resource please leave a review! :)

Pythagoras Theorem

Pythagoras Theorem

6 Worksheets on Pythagoras from the basic introduction to problems including pythagoras in 3D Pythagoras1 is 10 questions on calculating the length of the hypotenuse. **Pythagoras2 **is 10 questions on finding a shorter side. **Pythagoras3 ** is a mixture where the student will need to decide whether the unknown is the hypotenuse or not. Pythagoras4 is for more able students and involves two triangles where the theorem will need to be applied twice. Pythagoras5 Consists of applications of Pythagoras and worded questions. Pythagoras6 is five questions involving 3D applications of Pythagoras Pythagorasans is the answer sheet for all 6 worksheets

Fortnite Bearings Fun

Fortnite Bearings Fun

If you haven’t heard your students talking about Fortnite then where have you been? 45 million people play the shooter game Fortnite and I can’t stop the kids I teach from talking about it. This activity incorporates lots of different concepts: Ratios/Scales Bearings Speed, distance, time Pythagoras Area problem solving Edit and remove questions as you want. If you print at 100% the scale will be 1.5cm to 250m Otherwise you might have to give it a measure if you print to fit Also: The locations from the bearings are locations required for one of the challenges this season to get them even more engaged. Half my class have taken the work home to finish so they can gain in game rewards

3D Pythagoras Problems

A collection of six questions designed to challenge students when they have ‘mastered’ conventional uses of pythagoras theorem. All questions work as great revision for GCSE, and a nice stretch challenge for KS3 too.

Triangle properties revision activity

Triangle properties revision activity

An always, sometimes, never activity looking at various properties of triangles (angles, sides, perimeter, area, symmetry and a few more). Includes a wonderfully sneaky (but potentially confusing!) example of triangle area sometimes being the product of the lengths of all three sides. A good way of stimulating discussion, revising a range of topics and exposing misconceptions. Please review and give feedback, whether you like the activity or whether you don’t!

Trig-Sta 18 - two nets based on latest World Cup Telstar, with trig reminders as logos

Trig-Sta 18 - two nets based on latest World Cup Telstar, with trig reminders as logos

I was so intrigued by Matt Parker on You Tube (Geometry of Footballs) that I thought I would see if I could model the latest World Cup ball, the Telstar 18 - these are the results. You have a one sheet one piece net and a DeLuxe 6 sheet model. The shoe company’s logo that usually adorns these balls is based on a 30-60-90 RAT and so I thought some revision notes on Pythag and Trig might work. I’ve included some design notes on the shoe company’s logo in the ppt. So far in the Platonic League, cubes ruled until 1970 - when the Telstar a truncated icosahedron held sway until Germany 2006 with a dodecahedron, then South Africa 2010 with an octahedron. But the cubes fought back in Brazil and now Russia. Tetrahedron anyone?

Pythagoras' Theorem Stack up

Pythagoras' Theorem Stack up

A worksheet to test they can find missing sides of a right angled triangle, with the added step of finding the area at the end. I recommend my class use surds for accuracy, if however you allow them to round it does lead to interesting discussions about why their answers are slightly different.
