Maths / STEM / Science Project Lesson - Density of Metals (Density, Ratio, Volume)

This is a Maths/STEM project lesson based around calculating and comparing the density of different metals. Students have to first calculate and rank the densities of the metals, than answer questions based on combining different ratios of metals. These questions involve working out density, volume or mass from compound metal alloys of differing ratios. The lesson was pitched at year 10, and has a support sheet to enable access for foundation students. The lesson was designed to last 75 minutes, but actually the difficult quesitons in the sheet means it could easily last 90 minutes or more if required.

MORE THAN JUST A MEMORY GAME!! Though this was created as a memory game, its cards can be used for so many other fun and educational activities, games and study aides. Print these pages out double-sided. This will make the page containing a colorful design the cover, or top, of the cards. Laminate the printed sheets to make for more durable playing cards (printing with card stock can also help with durability). Cut the cards along the black line. Once cut, mix the cards up, lay them out, and take turns flipping cards over. Kids will be exercising their memory, learning, and having fun while doing so! :)

A set of questions to practise working backwards from a volume to find a missing length in cuboids, cylinders, pyramids, cones and spheres. The volume is fixed each time at 1 litre, allowing pupils to focus on the process of reversing the operations. Inspired by variation theory, keeping as much as possible fixed focussed attention on the on the effect of changing only one element. Each question is related to a previous one, and pupils should be encouraged to predict what each new answer might be before computing, leading to discussion and further thinking if the predictions are not realised. Answers are included.

I downloaded a font from dafont.com for free so if you want to edit the worksheets (I have included the Word versions so you can do so) you will have to download the font too.

I ask pupils to get into pairs, take turns rolling two dice to form a co-ordinate and attempt to solve the corresponding question. Pupil put their initials on problems they have solved and after 30-45 minutes stop and count who has solved the most. Very engaging for year 10 and 11 foundation GCSE pupils. Horse racing- themed challenge on perimeter, area and volume (Upper KS2 / Lower KS3)

This is a challenging activity where children must use their problem solving and reasoning skills to solve perimeter, area and volume questions. It worked exceptionally well with my Y5 class and the horse racing theme really inspired the children! This activity works best over a whole lesson and I like to put the children into mixed ability groups. Some of the questions are quite challenging (although it doesn’t deviate from the national curriculum in anyway) which makes it ideal for Y5 and 6 children; it could also be used in a lower KS3 setting as a fun way to recap on perimeter, area and volume. This pack includes the activity, a question sheet and a powerpoint which not only gives the correct answers but explains each step visually for the children - this makes it ideal for the children to self-assess and provide on-the-spot feedback to the whole class once the activity has been completed. This project is best used as homework as this is how the booklet has been structured. Feel free to edit in any way you want to.
