African Keyhole Gardens - sustainable schools

African Keyhole Gardens - sustainable schools

Grow vegetables in the UK, African style! Introduce your children to the world of growing plants through the lives of children in African countries. These Keyhole Gardens resources bring Africa to life, count towards Eco-Schools status and are fund to make too.You could start with a Bag Garden, and then add to your ‘African Garden’ by constructing tip-tap handwashers and then make a Keyhole Garden. The gardens help teach sustainability as they have a compost core, encourage use of 'grey water' and are made from locally available materials.

Bean sprouts and bag gardens

Bean sprouts and bag gardens

There are some resources here about growing beansprouts in class - takes about a week. You can do this easily and make it a Science project and use it to create graphs in maths. The bag garden thing is an extension of this, but it's a method used in Africa too, so great cross-curricualr links! There also is a national competition.
