Rounding (how and why) to powers of ten and decimal places

Rounding (how and why) to powers of ten and decimal places

Rather than just teaching how to round, this presentation and worksheet focuses on using the number line to explain why we round to a particular amount. Its worked really well with classes of all ability as I have found over the years that people forget about the link with the number line and being closer to one amount than another. The worksheet is in both PDF and Microsoft Publisher format. The presentation is on Microsoft Powerpoint.

Rounding - whats the word task

Rounding - whats the word task

Students have to spot the numbers that have been correctly rounded. There is a letter with each number, and the correct letters make an anagram - the first answer is whale, the second answer is pony. Task 1 is rounding to the nearest ten, hundred, etc. Task 2 is rounding to one decimal place. This works brilliantly as either a starter/settler or a plenary.

Rounding, Decimal Places and Significant Figures Revision Interactive Spreadsheet

Rounding, Decimal Places and Significant Figures Revision Interactive Spreadsheet

An Excel Workbook containing four spreadsheets to practice the GCSE skills of rounding, decimal places, significant figures and estimation. All sheets have an associated answer sheet going through each question. The questions have multiple choice answers, generated using the answer and potential misconceptions. If the correct letter is given it turns the answer box green, or red if incorrect. Note that your computer will need Microsoft Excel with Calculation Options set to 'Manual' and Macros enabled. There is a set up sheet which gives some advice on how to do this. Clicking the 'More Questions' black square will clear the sheet and recalculate questions and answers. Excel's Zoom Bar can be used to scale the sheet up and down to fit on your monitor. Note that as the questions are randomised, some questions could be repeated. With a constant number of re-generated questions (and answers), students can practice this to their heart's content. After all, practice makes perfect!

Rounding Bingo

Rounding Bingo

Resource contains ppt, teachers question card with a choice of three questions per solution, instructions and bingo cards. Like other maths bingo games, this often aids discussion of solutions and as it is in a win-able game format, aids engagement too. Laminate the teachers question set. You can then use a whiteboard marker to mark off and keep track of which questions you have asked. It will then wipe clean when you are done ready to use with another class. When you are ready to play, either cut up the bingo cards included or get students to draw 4x3 grids in their books. Then get students to choose 4 numbers from each line – this allows you to have more control when you are ready to complete the game by picking a max of three questions from one of the rows until you are ready to complete the game.
