Rainforest Protection and Use Decision Making Task

Ideal for KS3 or KS4. The worksheet deals with land use in the Indonesian rainforest and asks pupils to read about the standpoints of different groups including miners, farmers, local council members and others and make a decision on how to use the rainforest most effectively. This culminates in pupils using a map of Borneo (given on the worksheet) to zone different land uses in the most appropriate places and explain why they chose each area. The sheet can work as an activity on its own or could be used to scaffold a debate task. Resource created for the Environmental Management part of Geography IGCSE Theme 3 but could be used at various levels as the language in the task is not too challenging.

Rainforests (Kho Yai National Park in Thailand)

A 6 lesson scheme of work planned for Year 7 students using photographs from my own trip to the rainforest in Thailand as a more unusual case study. The scheme of work covers location, climate and adaptations of plants and animals to the rainforest. Lesson 4 was my particular favourite as we cleared all the chairs and tables to the sides of the classroom and (using the photographs in the presentation as inspiration) took a virtual field trip to the rainforest together. Lesson 5 and 6 are based on the Making Animals activity from the original Thinking Through Geography book by David Leat. A copy of this would be useful for these two lessons.
