CPD about differentiation in the classroom for all teaching staff

CPD about differentiation in the classroom for all teaching staff

This is a PPT presentation that started the staff journey into thinking more about differentiation in their classrooms. After the PPT i asked them to get into the subject departments and choose 3 different ways and trial them in the first half term and report back at the next staff meeting.

Written Communication with Parents - CPD Session!

Written Communication with Parents - CPD Session!

I delivered this CPD session to all members of our staff team who maintain regular contact with parents and other stakeholders, in a bid to improve the quality, accuracy, and clarity of our written communications. I'd recommend that the session takes about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes to deliver. We had received some negative feedback comments, regarding our communications, varying from examples of poor grammatical accuracy, to instances in which the tone of emails, letters, and other forms of correspondence were perceived as rude. It is surprising how common this is across schools, and how little training is provided on these forms of interaction. Following this training, we are receiving far fewer complaints, and many staff members now keep the help-sheets pinned up by the desks to refer to when communicating with parents. Participants learn through: - Participating in a fun pub-style quiz to eradicate common spelling, punctuation, and grammar misconceptions and errors; - Considering the role of parents, their needs and interests, and what they expect from their child's school, as a means to understand why schools sometimes receive difficult communications; - Reading and analysing examples of poor written correspondence, considering how both the tone and the accuracy can be improved; - Exploring different language strategies to create a personal, polite tone within emails, by considering the connotations of different words; - Taking away help sheets that can be referred to whenever written communications are being drafted. The resource pack includes: - Colourful and engaging whole-session PowerPoint presentation ; - Examples of written communications for participants to analyse; - Quiz answer sheet; - Accurate Written Communication help-sheet; - Polite Written Communication help-sheet. All images are licensed for commercial use, and are cited on the final slide. (Please note that the only section of the PowerPoint that you may wish to modify is with regards to the distinct features of parents at your own school - Aside from this, the resources are good to go!)

Behaviour Management Strategy - The Learning Pyramid (producing a learning state of mind)

Behaviour Management Strategy - The Learning Pyramid (producing a learning state of mind)

Here's how the very simple, but powerful pyramid is used: 1. When you want to improve a student's behaviour, refer to the part of the pyramid that the student needs to change. E.g. If you notice a student sitting in a way that doesn't demonstrate that they have their full attention given to the lesson, then remind them of the importance of their posture and get them to correct it. 2. Regularly refer to these three aspects of learning, and encourage students to be aware of how they use each aspect, because they cover every base. As you know, no behaviour management strategy will ever truly work unless you 'own' it. Remember, in any argument, the person with the most certainty, will win. You need to have the certainty within, and lead from your awareness of what makes people behave the way they do in the first place, and it's always these three things: 1. What they are focussed on. 2. How they are using their body (posture), and 3. What thoughts (and questions) they are saying to themselves inside. I designed this 'Learning Pyramid' in this way because it will help you remember these three foundations of human behaviour; keep an eye out for each of these with the individuals in your class and when you see any or all of them drift off target, bring them back in. Try asking, "Are you focussed on the task?" "How would you sit if you were?" and "What questions have you got about what we're doing now?" Three deceptively simple questions, but aimed right at the behaviour centres in the brain. This technique is simple, immediate and easy to communicate -and it encourages - and teaches - how students can create a learning state of mind - try it for yourself, and then with your class. And because you've read to the end, if you want to know more about creating your own sense of certainty - and be in control of your behaviour management, without stress - have a look at my other program The StressFreeClassroom, it's the best of what took me 20 years to learn - condensed so you can learn it in under an hour. All the best. Steve.

Supply teacher daily checklist, class feedback form and some useful websites

Supply teacher daily checklist, class feedback form and some useful websites

This is a three page document drawn up from my own needs. I've tried to price it fairly - it should be something you can adapt. It should save you some time and maybe even some stress. The first page is a simple but thorough checklist to ensure I have all the information I need for a successful day (I've left off the lesson content, which I tackle anyway). I've not currently added any icons but that's the way I wanted it, really straightforward. It's a standard checklist. The second page has some useful websites and last minute ideas for activities (mainly primary but could easily be adapted). The the third page is a feedback form to leave for the class teacher. You might find you want to move the sizing around or change some of the categories. Maybe you want to reduce it onto A5 instead of A4? There 's also a checklist for use when leaving the house at the beginning of the day and the classroom at the end, so you don't end up losing your favourite hat/water bottle/etc... I have this laminated on the back of my DBS folder, and on the back of my phone, which you might want to consider too - you can always reduce the typeface? They are in .docx format so can be manipulated and amended to help you. Good luck and happy supplying. Hope they help! Please email with feedback or leave me some lovely stars...

ART. Why ALPS score might not be accurate for ART.

ART. Why ALPS score might not be accurate for ART.

It's time for HODs to do data analysis and you might find that your A level ALPS score isn't as good as you had hoped. There might be reasons for this and this document provides an explanation of these reasons. The statements can be copied and dropped into your own analysis documents ... and can of course be edited to fit the needs of your department. Provided as a Word document for complete editing freedom.
