Balder the Invincible story map and model text for Talk 4 Writing inspired literacy

Balder the Invincible story map and model text for Talk 4 Writing inspired literacy

Use the icons to learn by the story heart (using actions - you can either make up your own ahead of teaching the children, or have them help decide, or a mixture of both - for speed and engagement). Use in conjunction with the Balder the Invincible model text resource. Vikings, myths and legends theme. Fronted adverbials, punctuation, speech, expanding vocabulary. Print and use story map in books for recall, display for learning and reference. Use story text for focused grammar and punctuation work. Use story text as a focus for 'story mountain' type structure work. It's really important that the children learn the rhythm of the sentences and punctuation. I found it helpful to record myself reading it (as an 'expert' adult voice) and upload it to the school website for the children to listen to at home and help them learn it off by heart.

Lesson based on the declaration of war on Germany in 1939. Tried and tested classroom resource. Pupils should make notes on the key facts given in the video clip. They will then produce their own news reader's script to break the news to the British public using the model text as an example. Two note taking templates and a copy of the success criteria for writing an effective news reader report is also included. This resource could be used with older pupils. *Please note the video clip is a modern colour interpretation of how the news would have been reported in 1939. The quality is significantly better.
