Inspired By.... Janesville: An American Story

Janesville: An American Story, by Amy Goldstein. 2017. The 2017 Business Book of the Year. It tells the story of Janesville, Wisconsin, home of a large GM car factory – until it closed in 2008. This is the story of what happened next. To understand modern America, you need to understand Janesville. Teaching as I do mostly foreign children the view from outside is that America is still a land of wealth and opportunity. To see its people, react and vote, in a manner that suggests otherwise is deeply puzzling. Outside the country the US voter’s desperation for change looks merely like ignorance and hatred for everyone else. Outsiders need to understand that large parts of this once mighty nation have essentially been gutted thanks to globalisation and technological change. This lesson hopes to address that need. With a strong focus on EAL needs and vocabulary it tries to tell the story of the negatives of globalisation. It is part of a wider mini-SOW on Globalisation I have made especially for EAL students. Global cities and Urbanisation in Mumbai and Manchester - AQA and Eduqas

This lesson is the final lesson in Theme 2 for Urban and rural links. It looks at the changes rates of urbanisation including push and pull factors and industrial changes over time. The lesson then looks on further to global and world cities and considers New York as one of these cities and looks at how successful it has become as a result of the 5 factors that influence global cities. Students then compare and contrast two global cities, Mumbai in an NIC and Manchester in the UK (HIC) they look at a variety of factors such as challenges, reasons for growth and management of these cities. The last task is concerned with an examination question that summarises all of the information and evaluates it in an AO3 question.

The people living here have to contend with harsh environments with access to little clean water, electricity and struggle to get jobs and capital. Part of the introduction lessons on Brazil- this will take a double lesson. This lesson introduce pupils to the physical and human features of Brazil. Starter- watch a ‘Welcome to Brazil’ video. Introductory facts, size, captial city etc. Main activity- around the room task, pupils make a table in their books Picture number description physical or human? As pupils work their way around the room they will collect information, filling this table in as they go. Activity 2- Use atlases for assistance, locate them on a map of Brazil. Plenary- postcard home.

sustainable management of slums urbanisation of cities push & pull geography

All the resources for a series of lessons lesson about Delhi. Designed for both KS3 or 4. Pupils have an information sheet (best printed in A3 & colour). This provides them with the detail that they need about Delhi. Slums, character, problems of urbanisation in less developed countries, push & pull factors and sustainable management. This information can be used to create a variety of work, but I find that a diary works best (included). There is a structured Q & sheet and subsequent SPaG sheet that I print on green paper to address the needs of most schools literacy policy. The assessment also put pupil learning into context & can be peer/self or teacher assessed. I have even included a teacher feedback sheet that is used to speed up the marking process. These tasks actually take about (roughly) 5 lessons to complete.
