people 1-9 gcse geography gcse ks3 uk urban trends urbanisation counter

A great lesson that covers a variety of urban trends. I based this on the pupils local area, but it could very simply be adapted to your own area. The GCSE Q & A really tests their understanding. Covers most new 1-9 gcse geography specifications, but terminology may need slightly altering. A great lesson that covers key geographical content and statistical analysis and explaining.

Settlement patterns (complete lesson)

Settlement patterns (complete lesson)

This lesson introduces the terms linear, dispersed and nucleated settlements. It comes complete with PowerPoint and worksheets to structure the activities. The pupils first learn what the phrases mean, and then … … see if they can identify the patterns in aerial photograph examples of all three. They then go on to look at the causes that lead to the development of all three types of settlement pattern. After this, the pupils describe each settlement pattern in their own words … … and then using online maps like google, they try to find examples. The lesson starts to introduce the idea that the larger the settlement, the more services it has. Lastly, if the pupils have time, they find and print off aerial photos of each settlement pattern using the satellite feature of online mapping tools.

Google Tour Creator- Creating a FREE web-based Google Street Maps Based 'Virtual Tour'

Google Tour Creator- Creating a FREE web-based Google Street Maps Based 'Virtual Tour'

Google Tour Creator is a FREE web-based tool lets you build a VR ‘tour’ using Google Street View imagery and the bonus is that you can even add your own 360 photos, if you have that available. The interface is designed with educators and pupil in mind and is all simply drag-and-drop. The flexibility of tour creator is that you can choose any points of interest within the Google Street View maps and add extra texts, or points of interest if you like. With the Virtual Tour you can save any tour you have made and also publish it, for public or private use. The ability to import tours to the Google Expeditions app is not available yet but will be very soon states Google. Being able to create an Expedition and share it with a classroom of pupils is a great opportunity for technology being able to bring people closer, to understand other people worlds. Not every pupil will need a VR headset as this can be created and used on a laptop attached to an interactive whiteboard, but for those that are lucky enough to have a class set the sense of immersion and engagement would be outstanding I think. This presentation informs you what Google Tour Creator is and I have created a simple model that can be used to show pupils as an example.

OUTSTANDING TRF Debate lesson- 'Should we contact the last remaining tribes on Earth?'

OUTSTANDING TRF Debate lesson- 'Should we contact the last remaining tribes on Earth?'

This lesson is always enjoyable as the students are fascinated by the content and are always up for debating each other! Depending on the group, this usually involves 1 prep lesson, with lots of videos (links in the ppt) and discussion and then the debate lesson 2- which I usually finish the biosphere/TRF topic with. Works really well if you choose the mediators/judges based on their personalties and abilities and ask senior staff to join you for it and be a part of one of the teams/judges. This lesson works for various ages as the question is very open to their own views and your role is to facilitate their ideas. Enjoy & please review if you download :)

The Himalayas

The Himalayas

Part of the world’s largest mountain range can be found in north India, the Himalayas. The mountains act as a natural barrier preventing the cold wind from Central Asia entering India and stopping southwest winds which carry monsoons, helping to fertilise India’s soil with the rain it pours down. These worksheets look at life living in the mountains in a place called Uttarakhand through a student lead activity

Inspired By.... Janesville: An American Story

Inspired By.... Janesville: An American Story

Janesville: An American Story, by Amy Goldstein. 2017. The 2017 Business Book of the Year. It tells the story of Janesville, Wisconsin, home of a large GM car factory – until it closed in 2008. This is the story of what happened next. To understand modern America, you need to understand Janesville. Teaching as I do mostly foreign children the view from outside is that America is still a land of wealth and opportunity. To see its people, react and vote, in a manner that suggests otherwise is deeply puzzling. Outside the country the US voter’s desperation for change looks merely like ignorance and hatred for everyone else. Outsiders need to understand that large parts of this once mighty nation have essentially been gutted thanks to globalisation and technological change. This lesson hopes to address that need. With a strong focus on EAL needs and vocabulary it tries to tell the story of the negatives of globalisation. It is part of a wider mini-SOW on Globalisation I have made especially for EAL students. I’d highly recommend teaching this lesson in the context of the wider SOW so students get a real appreciation of the larger forces at work. Hope it helps. See more at www.wolseyacademy.com

Global cities and Urbanisation in Mumbai and Manchester - AQA and Eduqas

This lesson is the final lesson in Theme 2 for Urban and rural links. It looks at the changes rates of urbanisation including push and pull factors and industrial changes over time. The lesson then looks on further to global and world cities and considers New York as one of these cities and looks at how successful it has become as a result of the 5 factors that influence global cities. Students then compare and contrast two global cities, Mumbai in an NIC and Manchester in the UK (HIC) they look at a variety of factors such as challenges, reasons for growth and management of these cities. The last task is concerned with an examination question that summarises all of the information and evaluates it in an AO3 question.

Living In The City

Shanty towns can be found in on the outskirts of many large cities especially in LEDCs. The people living here have to contend with harsh environments with access to little clean water, electricity and struggle to get jobs and capital. These worksheets have the students consider which elements are most important for survival, how they would trade with others and work with local authorities to better their lives

sustainable management of slums urbanisation of cities push & pull geography

sustainable management of slums urbanisation of cities push & pull geography

All the resources for a series of lessons lesson about Delhi. Designed for both KS3 or 4. Pupils have an information sheet (best printed in A3 & colour). This provides them with the detail that they need about Delhi. Slums, character, problems of urbanisation in less developed countries, push & pull factors and sustainable management. This information can be used to create a variety of work, but I find that a diary works best (included). There is a structured Q & sheet and subsequent SPaG sheet that I print on green paper to address the needs of most schools literacy policy. The assessment also put pupil learning into context & can be peer/self or teacher assessed. I have even included a teacher feedback sheet that is used to speed up the marking process. These tasks actually take about (roughly) 5 lessons to complete.

Conflict in National Parks

Conflict in National Parks

A lesson (or easily a week’s worth) on National Park conflict issues. This is based around a ‘case study’ looking at a map of a local farming area (which I made-up) to get students to consider the problems created by proposed changes in UK National Parks. Includes maps, questioning tasks, letter writing cloze exercise, word search etc. All of the worksheets are included in the powerpoint and I’ve added some notes about how I used this. Additional ones could easily be made as needed by editing slides. Initially made for an interview lesson and then adapted for teaching (once I got the post - yay!) It was made for low ability SEN students in year 9 but I think could be easily adapted (and I’ve used it with year 7 since as well so quite flexible). I found it took 2-3 lessons with mine to do it nicely. Thanks for looking :)
