Analogue and Digital Time Spans

A set of challenging tasks for more able upper primary pupils and KS3. These tasks assess the children’s ability to read analogue time, and to convert analogue to digital time. They are then scaffolded in the use of a method by which they can calculate time spans using digital time readings. Eight tasks are arranged in increasing order of difficulty using 12 and 24 hour time. The tasks are designed to provide a grounding from which pupils can go on to explore the effectiveness of various mental strategies to quickly and accurately calculate more complex time spans. The worksheets can be filled in by hand or electronically on a PC/tablet. The clock hands can be re-directed by clicking on them twice and pulling the arrow-tip around to tailor your own tasks.

Theme Park Challenge - Maths

A good “Final Week” style activity which can last over several sessions or be finished in an afternoon. On sale for this final week of the term. Enjoy the Summer! Everything included - just add dice! This is a roleplay experience for children, aimed at Years 4 and above. Using squared paper and the instructions contained within, children design their own Theme park, use dice to generate the number of visitors, and see how much they made. Added problems such as rides not working add variation to each of the five days. Each ride has its own excitement rating and this means that children need to build a balanced park to fit the tastes of everyone. The game guides children and yourself through each of the steps with clear examples given for each step too. Mathematically this requires HTO x O skills, as well as some basic area knowledge (understanding that a footprint of 3x3 for a ride would mean 3 squares by 3 squares, so 9 squares). Custom-made games to fit a theme can be commissioned on request - get in touch!

Print off multiple copies for groups to use Set up the ground rules, pupils are to display their answers and totals clearly Only check their totals and inform them if they are right or wrong, encourage resilience Pupils will answer each sheet and total each sheet as they go along, then they will have to use a combination of their totals to unlock a cashbox full of goodies. Only allow calculators if you are running out of time and allow 2 goes at the combination only for each group, this will deter guesswork!

This is a fully resourced, fully differentiated maths revision lesson on measurement, and a whole heap of fun. I threw some code breaking as a starter in there to get them warmed up. My KS4 SEND students loved it as a break from Functional Skills practice papers. This could easily work for UKS2 and LKS3. This download includes: Bright, colourful and highly engaging Powerpoint presentation 3 sets of clue worksheets, differentiated four ways each- so 12 in total! A worksheet to collect their answers through the steps and to help them work through the suspect list. Hope you enjoy it and it saves a bit of time. Many students tend to do well with the computational components of mathematics. Unfortunately, the same pupils tend to have difficulty with thoroughly explaining how they solved the problems in written form. As educators, we know that students being able to explain their solution processes are a crucial component to long-term retention of the mathematical concepts they need to succeed in numeracy mastery. This mini unit deals with classifying triangles by angle measurement. This study provides a week-long lesson that incorporates multiple opportunities for your students to solve real-world problems computationally. Then, it requires that they explain their solution process in both an oral (Accountable Talk), and a written (Brief Constructed Response) format. Within these responses, the students are encouraged to use logical thinking to PROVE or JUSTIFY (Higher Level Bloom’s Taxonomy Components) their solution processes. This action enables the student to think about the steps they took to get to the answer-a process that has been proven to enhance student retention of relevant skills in mathematics. Lastly, the students are required to complete a Student Self-Assessment. This part of the unit is also crucial to student interpretation and retention of the solution process because it needs them to think about their form of thinking and be accountable to what is involved in effectively solving a word problem. Spoons game: Look it up, there are loads out there but in a nutshell: in groups of four. need three spoons (any other item will do as well) try to make a set of four but passing one card to the left and receiving a card for the right. if you finish a set as secretively as you can grab a spoon when you do that everyone else tries to get a spoon too. person who misses out adds the next letter of SPOONS on their sheet. play continues till all but one have written spoons. they are the winner. can also be used as a simple matching activity.
