What can chemists learn from nature: KS4 - Green Vanilla

What can chemists learn from nature: KS4 - Green Vanilla

Many of the chemicals we use as drugs, flavourings and perfumes originate from natural sources but often the most economical way of obtaining them is to produce them artificially on an industrial scale. Scientists at the University of Oxford are researching into how to use enzymes to make these processes as efficient and sustainable as possible. In this activity students find out about the chemical that gives vanilla its popular flavour - vanillin. They evaluate three different ways of producing vanillin artificially and learn about how to evaluate how ‘green’ chemical processes are using the principles of green chemistry. Learning outcomes: Students learn that many chemicals that originate from natural sources can be produced artificially. Students evaluate industrial processes using the principles of green chemistry. AQA Trilogy Combined Science Chemistry - Key Facts Recall Revision

AQA Trilogy Combined Science Chemistry - Key Facts Recall Revision

Key facts that students need to remember for AQA Combined Science Trilogy Chemistry Specification. The first slide shows the questions and the answers. I plan to give them to students as homework to learn. Then in the following 5-10 lessons they will get the same questions over and over again to help (or even force) them to try and remember them. The following slides are therefore just the same questions mixed up. I plan to just project them on the screen to save printing. I think this is the same as knowledge organisers. I just couldn’t find any that didn’t seem to have too much on for my students as I don’t want it to put them off. There is a tracker if you want to use it. The cells will change colour depending on if a student has improved, stayed the same ot got worse. Physics ones are also available to download

Extended writing question and marking grid- Hydrogen fuel cells

Extended writing question and marking grid- Hydrogen fuel cells

This is a past paper extended writing question for GCSE Chemistry with a marking grid feedback sheet. The marking grid has a space to write what went wells (WWW) and even better Ifs. The grid also contains a SPAG section where the students can be given a grade for the level of SPAG that they have used, and a suggested way of improving their SPAG. The levelled answers are to act as a mark scheme/ model answer. This makes marking specific to the students and provides consistency and saves time. Student feedback from using this model of assessment has been very positive.

Renewable and non-renewable energy, generating electricty and the environmental costs

Renewable and non-renewable energy, generating electricty and the environmental costs

Unit of work i have put together for my Grade 7 class (12 - 13yrs) prior to teaching them electrical circuits. There is a lot of information on global warming and acid rain and includes a case study for pupils to investigate the pros and cons of owning an electric vehicle. I have used some info graphics and a few worksheets I have downloaded from resources listed here. Otherwise the material is original.

To Plastic or Paper Bag... A matter of waste... Version 2.0

To Plastic or Paper Bag... A matter of waste... Version 2.0

To Plastic or Paper Bag… A matter of waste… Nersion 2.0 Plastic bag bans appear to be on the way to a supermarket near you or around the rest of the world. Resource investigates this problem. A list of web links are given to start pupils on their own research. I have also included a series of links to YouTube Vids - I would watch the documentary and then have pupils rate the social media comments. Do they like or dislike them. Then each has to be reasoned with a reply. I have tried to use as near as possible actual comments. Sorry to those people who have already downloaded this, but I really felt that it could do with a feedback page from a colleague/friend of the pupil completing the worksheet
