Allows pupils to research properties of alcohols, carboxylic acids and esters and how their uses link to these properties. It then allows them to design their own product using the properties. Usually takes around 3 lessons or can be completed as a summer homework.

Resources based on the new edexcel (9-1) specification. Includes power points for 9 lessons from this unit of work. This lesson requires no additional worksheets although the edexcel worksheets could be used to support the lesson Starter: Exam question on slide which pupils have key words for. This is then modelled on powerpoint. Main: pupils learn what is a homologous series, the formula for alkanes and then do some graph work. This is followed by some exam style questions on the powerpoint. Also uses some question to apply it to another homologous series Plenary: quick sum up of lesson

A series of work sheets covering Topic 7 - Organic chemistry for the new Chemistry GCSE. Some worksheets are structured notes sheets requiring students to fill in gaps (structures, equations, diagrams) whilst others are associated tasks to follow these notes sheets. Some of the question and task sheets are supplied as 4 copies to a page to help with photocopying costs. The notes sheets could be completed as a booklet. I have used these by discussing the material and drawing on a whiteboard. Students have then annotated and highlighted the sheets and added diagrams etc. This is aimed at students completing GCSE Chemistry at higher tier entry (grades 4-9)
