SEN Preventing rust on a bicycle

SEN Preventing rust on a bicycle

Used with a range of SEN and EAL students when covering a lesson on ways to prevent corrosion. Most students in the class traveled to school by bicycle and could relate to the theory behind what they could do to protect their bikes. Contains a cryptic puzzle that I used as a starter task.

GCSE chemistry: Electrolysis and half equations lesson (AQA and Edexcel focus)

GCSE chemistry: Electrolysis and half equations lesson (AQA and Edexcel focus)

Groups work where students build a model of what happens at the electrodes, in stages, and then photographs each stage (example included at the end of the PowerPoint). This is to help them visualise how to build half equations. The student writes up their work, using their photographs, for homework. I got my students to put their home work on a revision card for them to keep for mocks and GCSE. The lesson and resources are differentiated to three levels of difficulty.

Individual pupil investigations involving Chemical Reaction Rates.

Individual pupil investigations involving Chemical Reaction Rates.

Partially structured activity that involves individual pupil investigations involving Chemical Reaction Rates. Remember - Health and Safety is the responsibility of the teacher in charge of the activity. Consult with your laboratory technician and try the experiment before allowing the pupils to attempt the experiment. You know your pupils best. Free starter and plenary activities are provided. Activity is partially structured allowing projection of sheets onto Interactive White Board to allow class discussion. The idea being to throw the process over to the pupils. A suggested marking schedule is also provided, along with Grading and Feedback Sheets. I would suggest putting the pupils into 'marking pairs' and letting them grade each others work and give feedback. Then cast an eye over the work to check it has been done correctly. This activity teaches the pupils how to interpret a marking matrix and make judgements as to what is required to achieve each grade. It takes patience giving the pupils practice carrying out his activity, but will ultimately result in higher pupil achievement and easier marking for you.
