Guides for using Fusion 360

These two guides should help most students get to grips with Fusion 360. There are 2 versions available, I would suggest starting all students on the basic version, then distribute the Advanced sheets as required. I have trialed these guide sheets with Y7 - 10 students and found if they follow the steps closely they can excel with this powerful software package. The guides encourage students to build using ‘Components’ as a number of my pupils have become stuck having designed their model as a collection of ‘Bodies’. Although it makes teaching the software slightly more challenging to begin with, I have found this approach produces more stable models in the long run. These resources are freely available, make use of them and share, but please keep the logo on the bottom and do not sell them on. Thanks Dan

The main issues we had as a technology department is to show the students progress from one rotation to another. I have developed a ring bind folder organiser to help the teachers collate the information. The class Teacher can then hand the folder to the next teacher and it shows progress over time. Included in the document is a few templates. 5 Great lesson starter activities that can be adapted for ANY subject or curriculum. Activities are fun and focus on pupil choice for theory and literacy recap! Download the PowerPoint to use or adapt to suit your subject area. Brightly coloured with a simple layout: Knowledge Wheel: Students have to get from A-B by answering the questions correctly. However, if they want to get the most points, the must take the long route around, answering the more difficult coloured questions. This method gives students a choice and is differentiated for different levels of ability. Target Practice: Using 3 darts, students must select 3 questions to answer to try to get the most points. Question difficulty varies based on the number of points each colour is worth. Again, this method gives students a choice and is differentiated for different levels of ability. Keyword Scrabble: Students must figure out each of the keywords by answering the clues and matching the letters to the total number of points. This activity is a great way to check student understanding and correct spellings. Connect 4 Analysis: Students must connect 4 in a row, either vertically, horizontally or diagonally. At the top of each column there is a product analysis heading. Student can only connect 4 if they correctly analyse the product based on the heading. For example: Analysis the function of the torch, iPhone, fidget spinner and washing machine. Analysing the aesthetics of the watch, consumer of the baby toy, function of the fidget spinner and material of the Xbox pad. The gives students a choice from a range of analysis categories. Vocab Snap: Students have 2 minutes to match the vocabulary word to its definition. Using a mini whiteboard they can write, 5E…1C etc. This is a great way of embedding keywords and literacy easily.

ScratchUp! A cunning combination of Sketchup (3D CAD) and Scratch (Coding)

This is ScratchUp! A cunning combination of Sketchup (3D CAD) and Scratch (Coding) to bring your pupils’ programming projects to life! The idea for this emerged after teaching my classes Sketchup as a specific CAD tool within the DT curriculum to design lunar buggies, before then proceeding to the build stage. I was so impressed at their grasp of the software and 3D design as a concept, that I wanted to set a new challenge. Similarly, they had progressed extremely well in my computing lessons until they were quite proficient using coding constructs and concepts within Scratch, so what was the next step? I noticed that their sprite and background design within Scratch always fell short of their best, probably as they were so keen to code and get their project working. It was all coloured blobs and stick men; purely functional, but little in the way of inspiring graphical user interfaces! Enter: Sketchup. I decided that they could use their design skills to create high quality sprites, then export them as a 2D graphic to be loaded into Scratch as a costume. And then it hit me.  Why not export a series of rotations of a 3D sprite, load multiple images into a sprite’s costume, then animate it, so it appears as a rotating 3D sprite? The possibilities are endless! This is a great project i do with year 8. It brings together, traditional hand cutting, CAD/CAM, Electronics and Computer programming. Brief: Students are to design and make a programmable robotic buggy. Outline: Students design a profile, prototype out of card board, then cut out of acrylic using a scroll/coping saw. Wheels are designed then cut out using the laser cutter. Circuit board is soldered together. Genie chip is programmed to bring the buggy to life.
