Calculus: Optimisation

The presentation begins with a review of quadratics and presents students with an optimisation question which they are expected to solve using quadratics. The concept of optimisation is then explored in more detail by asking students to find the maximum volume that can be made from a 12cm x 12cm square (in the context of for instance minimising production costs). This site provides a useful platform through which to launch into a discussion about finding the maximum volume. There are then a selection of questions which I printed out and placed around the room for students to tackle, in pairs. For the plenary, the students are presented with a similar (but note not identical) problem to the one at the start of the lesson and are asked to solve using calculus before checking their answer using quadratics. Designed as an activity to introduce calculus, this 3 page worksheet guides students through the idea of rates of change, the gradient of a straight line and then the gradient at different points on parabolas . Parabolas could be drawn by different students and then results shared. The idea is to derive the rule for parabolas of the form y = nx². The worksheet does not go into derivation using δx.

This question sheet is aimed at A Level students who are struggling to do simple algebraic manipulation where fractions are involved. For the most part these are not typical 'algebraic fractions' questions (e.g. adding algebraic fractions), but are more basic than that. For example, I have encountered students who are otherwise working at fairly high grades but are unable to differentiate, say, 3x/4 because they cannot see that it is equivalent to 3/4× x (and hence simply x multiplied by a constant). Another issue is that students quite often ‘simplify’ fractions by trying to cancel in invalid ways.

I give this to the students (printed in A4 or A5 depending on how much room they need) at the end of the lesson to assess an overview of the lesson. I mark it as soon as I can (ha) and it allows me to spot any misconceptions. The last question is a challenge one to push the most able students.
