Reflection Exploration

Reflection Exploration

This worksheet is intended for use with pupils working on Level 4 Maths and considering transformation of shapes. It encourages them to consider the implications of reflection in the x- followed by the y-axis (and vice versa) on the co-ordinates of the original shape and to link this repeated transformation to rotation of 180 degrees. It can be used as an extension task individually or as a group exercise and could be extended to cover further double transformations.

Graph transformations matching activity A2 maths

Graph transformations matching activity A2 maths

Nice team activity, differentiated with some basic transformations, harder transformations and some "extension" transformations. About 30 mins. This is for practicing how transformations affect specific co-ordinates. Match a set of original co-ordinates with the transformation and the image. You or the students will need to cut out the different cards- they are already mixed up on the sheets. answers provided on last two pages.

TESSELLATION - NOT JUST A FRIDAY AFTERNOON FUN ACTIVITY!

TESSELLATION - NOT JUST A FRIDAY AFTERNOON FUN ACTIVITY!

Year7/8 scheme of work. Includes 11 lesson plans, assessment and worksheets. Aim is for students to develop strategies to apply mathematical reasoning in practical situations. Develop their understanding of geometry to include 2-D shapes and transformations. Lesson plans need to be supplemented by selected questions from text book or worksheets.

Rotation support

Rotation support

A 'hands on tool' to support pupils understanding of rotation. The two disc are to be cut out and joined using a split-pin, or similar. Pupils can use the tool to track basic rotations (clockwise and anti-clockwise) by placing the tracing over the scale. Designed for a very low ability year 7 class, very well received.

Complete transformations of shapes (translation, reflection, rotation and enlargement)

Complete transformations of shapes (translation, reflection, rotation and enlargement)

Over the years I have built up a rather hefty transformations notebook file. I believe this includes everything that needs to be included to be able to teach everything on transformations of shapes (including stretching the most able as well as scaffolding for lower ability). It includes activities which can be taken off and used as a worksheet (some answers included) as well as quizzes (with answers as well). This is my go to for any year group throughout KS3 and KS4 when teaching transformations as i can pick out the best bits. I hope this is useful for your too. Enjoy! After the transformations there are some slides on congruent triangles, similarity and symmetry as this can lead on nicely after transformations.

Transformations Matching Card Sort

Transformations Matching Card Sort

Students first group the cards in to the four types of transformations. This will promote discussion of how to spot each type. Then students match each card to a description. Many of the descriptions are similar, promoting discussion of common misconceptions. There is also one extra description of each type of transformation. This is to stop students from not checking the last of each transformation, but also allows students to draw each type of transformation. This activity would be an ideal way to lead in to 'Describing Transformations' after covering 'Drawing Transformations'.

translations ppt matching activity

translations ppt matching activity

Fun whole class activity, plenary or review activity Based on 'concentration' card game - find matching triples of diagram, word description and translation vector On each turn, select three numbers If a matching triple - well done! - and leave the cards unturned…else click on each of the cards to turn them over again. Easier version of game – start with all the cards face up and find the matching triples Give up or out of time!? Press the right cursor to reveal all the cards Please leave a review if you find this resource useful – thank you!
