Eulerian Networks

This is a lesson intended to introduce pupils to Eulerian Networks. The lesson was initially delivered as part of an Year 7 ‘Welcome Week’ at the school. During the week there was a focus of Community and how Mathematics can be applied outside of the classroom. Although delivered to Year 7 classes, the mathematics can still be used higher in the school and beyond. It may also be an interesting activity to use with classes at the end of term as a ‘one-off’ lesson.

Theme Park Challenge - Maths

A good “Final Week” style activity which can last over several sessions or be finished in an afternoon. On sale for this final week of the term. Enjoy the Summer! Everything included - just add dice! This is a roleplay experience for children, aimed at Years 4 and above. Using squared paper and the instructions contained within, children design their own Theme park, use dice to generate the number of visitors, and see how much they made. Added problems such as rides not working add variation to each of the five days. Each ride has its own excitement rating and this means that children need to build a balanced park to fit the tastes of everyone. The game guides children and yourself through each of the steps with clear examples given for each step too. Mathematically this requires HTO x O skills, as well as some basic area knowledge (understanding that a footprint of 3x3 for a ride would mean 3 squares by 3 squares, so 9 squares). Print off multiple copies for groups to use Set up the ground rules, pupils are to display their answers and totals clearly Only check their totals and inform them if they are right or wrong, encourage resilience Pupils will answer each sheet and total each sheet as they go along, then they will have to use a combination of their totals to unlock a cashbox full of goodies. Only allow calculators if you are running out of time and allow 2 goes at the combination only for each group, this will deter guesswork!

Out of This World Classifying Triangles by Sides Mini Unit

Many students tend to do well with the computational components of mathematics. Unfortunately, the same pupils tend to have difficulty with thoroughly explaining how they solved the problems in written form. As educators, we know that students being able to explain their solution processes are a crucial component to long-term retention of the mathematical concepts they need to succeed in numeracy mastery. This mini unit deals with classifying triangles by side measurement. This study provides a week-long lesson that incorporates multiple opportunities for your students to solve real world problems computationally. Then, it requires that they explain their solution process in in both an oral (Accountable Talk), and a written (Brief Constructed Response) format. Within these responses, the students are encouraged to use logical thinking to PROVE or JUSTIFY (Higher Level Bloom’s Taxonomy Components) their solution processes. This action enables the student to think about the steps they took get to the answer-a process that has been proven to enhance student retention of pertinent skills in mathematics. Lastly, the students are required to complete a Student Self-Assessment. This part of the unit is also crucial to student interpretation and retention of the solution process because it requires them to think about their form of thinking and be accountable to what is involved in effectively solving a word problem. ALL proceeds from this lesson resource will be donated to the charity STECS (Scottish Terrier Emergency Care Scheme UK). So please ask colleagues to purchase rather than “share”. This is an engaging, editable maths STEM activity with a World Cup & Russian spy theme. So it really works well for KS3 pupils who are interested in Football and also those who are totally not! Pupils use a cipher wheel to solve maths questions in each round (differentiated, some easy some more challenging), to find a Russian spy. It requires pupils moving around the school and some support from other colleagues eg receptionist, lab techs-maybe you could even convince the Head teacher to act as the spy? Everyone involved really enjoyed it. This took 2 hours, but could be shortened by removing middle rounds. I have had really good feedback from a variety of teachers at my school who delivered this maths based STEM lesson as non subject specialists (form tutors) during a collapsed timetable week at school with KS3 pupils . This could also be used as team building activity for staff and pupils.

A great challenge for Year 6, or more able Year 5 pupils. In this task, pupils use their knowledge of area and perimeter to solve problems relating to Google Earth images, which include accurate real-life measures. They will also need to have a secure understanding of money and written methods for the four operations to solve these (e.g. how much would it cost to turf a football pitch? etc) I gave it to my group in an envelope marked ‘challenge’ and let them work in pairs with felt tips on big bits of sugar paper.

An Inquiry Based Maths Project with Measure, Fractions & Data Analysis

Help the chickens escape a life of drudgery with this week long inquiry based math project focusing on animal rights. It offers collaborative learning and hands on inquiry requiring the children to solve problems, think critically and apply their knowledge of measure, area, data analysis, fractions, ratio tables and word problems as they help: Chickens to escape a factory farm with the help of the fastest farm animals Plan and design a chicken farm, chicken coop and run using measure and fractions Research, compare and contrast data of wingspans, analyse data and record their data Build model wings based on measure and research Calculate the amount of food necessary for their chicken farm And much more! Informational text is included that the children will have to identify and use in order to solve the problems. Research will be necessary as the children have to know the various wingspans of certain birds and compare them with chickens. UK & USA spelling included. It culminates in a class presentation of the facts found ,reasoning as to their plan and design of their team’s escape and new chicken coop and run. Comparing and contrasting each group’s work, helps with critical thinking too and communication skills. Wholly differentiated, ( Task B cards are less challenging) you can use it as a summative assessment tool of the skills and standards included. It can be created as a booklet or in a binder, with a front cover included, being used as a goal setting pre assessment for the children. Mix and match the pages to suit your students’ needs. I prefer to have the children work on the design pages individually before they compare their designs within a small group and work together to collaboratively create their group plan of the chicken coop & run and the great escape! This inquiry based math packet is easy to print and go, perfect for an IB PYP Sharing the Planet theme and thoroughly encourages student agency throughout. I designed it for my IB PYP 4th grade class. It can be used 3rd – 5th grade too. Pythagorean Tree Lesson, accessible from Y6 to Y13 !!

This lesson introduces the patterns and maths behind the amazing Pythagorean Tree. Print off the worksheet and dotted paper (make sure the printer option has no scaling then the dots remain as 5mm) Start the lesson by showing the ppt. At a basic level the lesson is to follow the procedure and draw the tree. The higher level is to fill in the worksheet and spot the patterns and make predictions. The optional top level is to find the formulas. Either way, the lesson provides a great introduction to fractuals and produces some accessible and interesting sequences.
