#### The nth term of an arithmetic sequence worksheet (with solutions)

A worksheet on finding the nth term of an arithmetic sequence given its first terms. The formula dn+(a-d) is used. Solutions are included.

This can be used to generate quadratic and cubic sequences and uses difference table to show the step by step solution. It also has a quadratic solver which will give the nth term of a sequence. On the right hand side there are cells that can be copied and pasted to use the sequence.

It does look at some more challenging questions and when to use one formula as opposed to another, i.e. looking at efficiency. This lesson/revelation was one of the cornerstones of why I became passionate about mathematics. I have used various slides from this PowerPoint to do maths assemblies as well. Pupils love this lesson and some of the slides are mind-blowing. Love it !!! This builds on pupils understanding of sequences and does lend well to looking at series (different ways of writing rules or describing sequences). What I am saying is this lesson is brilliant in terms of adding the WOW factor as well as leading nicely into part 6 of the bundle/ series on sequences. This is the fourth lesson in the series. It looks at other sequences that are not linear or quadratic. These are becoming increasingly popular in GCSE exams as it stretches pupils understanding and not just their ability to pass exams. It also includes other sequences problems that don't neatly fit into the previous lessons. This is one of my favourite lessons to teach because there are so many different types of sequences and it does make you think. This lesson is on quadratic sequences and goes through two methods to solve quadratic sequences. One method builds on their understanding of linear sequences as well, which is helpful. The other builds on their understanding of substitution and simultaneous equations. I teach both methods even though the majority of pupils will adopt the first method. I have found that giving pupils more understanding and methods and this does pay dividends in the long run. #### Rich task: Finding the mean from a grouped table discovery

Students will discover for themselves how to find the mean from a grouped table. They will then get lots of practice with it whilst trying to find the patterns in each puzzle in the collection. They are very rich tasks, with a low entry point (students only need to know how to find the mean of a set of numbers) and an extremely high ceiling (involving sequences and series). Very easy to differentiate for different abilities (either skip pattern 10 or add the brainbox questions). The task ends with a paired activity where students create their own patterns.

Students divide a line in a given ratio and eliminate 8 of the 9 answers until they have one remaining. Used as a plenary to this topic.

#### Cubic Sequences and Geometric Sequences

To be used with a top set class but a starting cover of Cubic and Geometric sequences following the new 9-1 GCSE spec. Not an in-depth lesson however covers cubic sequences (from applying quadratic sequence skills) and then geometric which is fairly self-explanatory I should imagine. An NQT so all feedback welcomed! #### C2 Sum to Infinity: Height of a pyramid.

This is an extension activity where students make and A3 and an A5 frustum pyramid. After measuring the heights of the 2 frustums they use the sum to infinity formula to calculate the height of a full pyramid made of infinite frustums. It worked really well with my year 12's but for the activity I only gave them the link to the video and the question, how could you calculate the height of a pyramid using frustums and they had to work the rest out. Hope it works for you. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

#### FTSE 100 data worksheet

Please enable macros and ensure that the following add-ins are installed: Analysis Toolpak and Analysis Toolpak VBA (this can be done by going to Tools, then add-ins when in Excel) This program models the fluctuations of the FTSE 100 or Woodfine's 10 (all prices move according to a given sequence type). Students are to choose several companies to invest in and watch how their share prices fluctuate. A great lesson activity as a competition or linked with sequences.
