Ideal for the start of a lesson, a quick filler, a homework, part of a cover lesson or as a plenary on the board with a whiteboard pen. The idea behind these is to get students to become more literate and think independently about the words that could be used to describe the topic being taught. The repetition of the word over and over as they look for the word is useful in remembering the terms. Often the students will pick up on things that you would not normally expect!

Creative and Persuasive Writing, and Comprehension Lesson

Creative and Persuasive Writing, and Comprehension Lesson

Read through a chapter of the book, explore the topic, answer questions and discuss, in preparation for a creative piece that will not only strengthen literacy skills and persuasive writing, but will build upon self awareness and communication through writing. Ernie, the small Spanish snail, has left his home and family behind to pursue his dreams of finding a paradise snail garden. Write a letter back home to your parents and siblings, who ridiculed you and made fun of you for pursing such a 'crazy' dreams. Try to explain to them why, it means so much to you that you gave up everything to go in search of it. Included in the lesson in a whole chapter from the book 'Ernie Gonzales: The Determined Dreamer', in which Ernie describes, in detail, what his dream is, his love of his grandpa, Manuel; the very person who inspired his dream, his relationship to the rest of his family and how their opinion of him was a factor in him leaving home. Teacher's notes contains questions/points to discuss, written by the author, to guide the pupils to create a letter, written from the point of view of Ernie to his family back home, explaining to them why it meant so much to him to set out of such a daring, and uncertain, journey to reach an Olive Garden that only he, and his grandpa, believes exists. Also the pupils should strive convince his family to get behind his dream and join him for a better life in the paradise garden that he hopes to find. Includes an 'Ernie's Letter' worksheet that pupils may wish to use for their final draft. Also includes original images from the book. All text is copyright Beth Shepherd.
