There are three worksheets and a display poster which I have always used as a refresher. Useful Trig Values - this is the display sheet which reminds pupils to learn the value of Sin 30°, cos 45° etc. The Sine Of Any Angle - Starts with the graph of y = sin(x) between 0° and 360° and asks students to find the angle whose sine is 0.5 etc. - no point in asking them to find the sine of 150 though as the calculator will do this. The Cosine Of Any Angle - obviously the same idea as the first sheet but using Cosine. The Tangent Of Any Angle - and the same again but using Tan graph. Answer Sheet

Where was the free kick taken from? - Photos, football and algebraic fractions

Inspired by a Numberphile video where they use still images to calculate the position of a footballer taking a free kick (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffvojZONF_A) Resource is aimed at GCSE groups (higher) and will need at least an hour. Students are given four photographs and instructions that allow them to calculate where each player was standing when they took the free kick by measuring distances on the photographs and computing cross-ratios. They then have to solve a simple algebraic fraction equation to work out the unknown distance. Included: presentation to help explain the tasks, worksheet with photographs and an additional sheet that scaffolds the process if needed, set of exemplar answers. Students can draw any straight line they like from the ball to the goal so they will have different distances in their cross ratio but should end up with the same final answers. Potentially leads to discussion opportunities about how the cross-ratio changes with the players position and even an introduction to limits as you consider what happens if the player is very close to or very far away from the penalty area. *Presentation edited to include extension tasks incorporating using trig to find the kick angle and problem solving to work out the location of a different player and flight path of a pass followed by a shot **Answers updated to include challenge 1 and 2

This is a sample from a collection of short tests on trigonometry in right-angled triangles. All the tests are quite short (3/4 questions, so 5-10mins max). I created them so that I was able to test my classes more regularly on topics at different points through the year - each test is similar enough so that classes hopefully improve at the “standard” questions but there is also some variety in the later questions in each test and a progression in difficulty as you go through the tests. There are 10 tests designed to be done with a calculator, 10 tests to be done without a calculator. The questions include: 1.Finding an angle or a side of a right-angled triangle 2.Stating the correct value of e.g. sin A for a given triangle (requires Pythagoras) 3.Knowing and using exact values of trig functions 4.Using trigonometry in isosceles triangles 5.Using trigonometry in 3D shapes 6.Using trigonometry where side lengths are given as surds 7.Proving identities/results with trig functions 8.Questions with bearings, angle of elevation/depression All tests come with fully-worked solutions which makes them easy to mark. The Area Of Any Triangle is a great worksheet for practicing Sine and Cosine rule and the formula Area = 0.5abSinc. It is aimed at grade 8 and 9 students. There are three different types of questions. Simple - given two sides and the included angle, use the formula to find the area. Harder - decide which angle you need to be able to find the area and then use the Sine rule or Cosine rule to find it first. A complete lesson on the 1/2 absinC area rule. Doesn’t include ‘reverse’ problems (I’ve made a separate resource on this). Activities included: Starter: A set of questions on area of triangles using bh/2. Main: An area question for pupils to attempt, given two sides and the angle between them. If they spot that they can use SOH to get the perpendicular height, they have effectively ‘discovered’ the 1/2absinC rule. If they don’t spot it, then the rule can be easily explained at this point. A set of questions designed to be done as a class using mini whiteboards, progressing from identifying the correct information needed to calculate area, to standard questions, to trickier questions (see cover slide for an example). A two-page worksheet (I’d shrink and print as one page) with a similar progression in difficulty, for pupils to consolidate. Includes a suggested extension task in the comments box of the powerpoint. Plenary: A closer look at question one from the worksheet, which links to the graph of sine.
