Pythagoras' Theorem - Solving Complex Problems

Pythagoras' Theorem - Solving Complex Problems

Students learn how to use Pythagoras' Theorem to calculate unknown lengths in a range of problems involving right-angled triangles. As learning progresses this is linked to finding the area and perimeter of composite shapes. At the start of the lesson students find the perimeter of a quadrilateral plotted on Cartesian axes by calculating the hypotenuse length between the vertices. In the plenary they are challenged to calculate the perpendicular height of a triangle whose vertices form the center of three identical circles. Differentiated Learning Objectives All students should be able to calculate the length between two coordinate pairs. Most students should be able to use Pythagoras’ Theorem to solve problems involving right-angled triangles. Some students should be able to calculate the longest diagonal in a cuboid. Mr Mathematics’ annual members have instant access to all lessons across Key Stage 3 and 4. Termly GCSE assessments are also available to monitor student’s progress. Theorem of Pythagoras

Theorem of Pythagoras

A set of eleven lessons (80 slides) which could be used individually or as introductions to textbook exercises. Pupils who have been absent from school and need to catch up with work would find these useful. Alternatively they could be used for revision or for class notes

Introduction to Pythagorus ( Discovery + Skills based)

Introduction to Pythagorus ( Discovery + Skills based)

Introduction to Pythagorus Lesson aimed at low ability KS4 Class, Used for Observation and feedback was very positive. Would be great as introduction to KS3 classes too. Includes measuring task starter - to get students to discover the 'HYPOTENUSE' . Learning ladder to show pupils where they need to get too- all exam questions (and for pupils to try at the end of the lesson to see how far they have got!) Another discovery task where students measure triangles and square numbers and see if they can spot a connection between a squared, b squared and c squared. Some students need a bit of hint but most spot the connection. Introduction to the 'theorem' and a bit of history on Pythagoras to engage students. Examples on how to work out a questions, using 'boxes' and without boxes. Questions for pupils to try with answers. Back to the Learning ladder for pupils to now try questions they didn't know how to start early. Quick quiz at the end based on key facts about Pythagoras and his theorem. Pupils really enjoyed this lesson and loved the practical measuring tasks and it seemed to help them understand the next steps clearly !
