Shapes

This SMART Notebook file explains how to categorise 2D and 3D shapes as well as how to calculate the area and perimeter of shapes. Finding lines of symmetry and drawing reflections is also included in this file. ClassLab activities help pupils to consolidate their understanding about how to sort 2D and 3D shapes as well as drag and drop activity.

Angles In Trees

During this lesson students investigate, estimate, identify and classify angles in the outdoors in preparation for furthering their understanding of geometry. They apply their understanding of angles to the real world by identifying a range of angles in their local environment. Students will develop communication skills as they write instructions and provide feedback. This lesson is designed to be taught outside. By spending time outdoors and connecting to nature, students are more likely to care for and conserve nature as adults.

Angles in polygons, including exterior and exterior; Angles within circles; Pictures, Videos and Worksheets

This is a bundle of 6 of my resources regarding angles! 5 documents are generators, which means at the click of any button you are able to generate a new worksheet. This provides a calm atmosphere in learning, familiarity in resources for students and can demonstrate progress over time. 3 of these documents are worksheet generators, which require students to find angles within polygons by viewing the polygons themselves. The easiest worksheet just regards triangles and straight lines. The medium worksheet involves quadrilaterals, simple algebra, and straight lines. Whereas the last worksheet involves a multitude of polygons. Each come with a supporting tab call a ‘cheat sheet’, containing an answer for every question listed on a separate bit of paper. These can be individually cut up and folded along the dotted line to act as supporting answers, You can use thesse at your discretion to support the least able, enabling these worksheets to be low access high challenge. Furthermore, another of these documents also requires you to find missing angles and lengths within various polygons by using algebra. Helpfully there is are hints which can either be included, or not included on the sheet, as they are on the sheet’s extremities so can easily can be cut off. Another worksheet regards angles, but this time they are entirely worded question. Testing students knowledge on exterior angles as well as interior angles this time. Finally the last document is a powerpoint involving 5 videos of me hand drawing different circle theorems. Each of the videos are silent but supported by questioning on the screen. This has proved to be a very useful tool in maximising student engagement, and getting the students to come up with the questions and answers themselves whilst watching the video, whilst you are able to help individuals or manage behaviour as required. Each of the videos, has futher suggestion points, and each can be paused and resumed at a pace that suits your class. Please review if you found useful :)

FIFA World Cup 2018: The Ultimate Bundle

Can you feel the excitement brewing for the FIFA World Cup 2018?!? My class cannot stop talking about the World Cup lately. This has driven me to make lots of resources based on the event. In this bundle I’ve included all of the resources I’ve made so far on the World Cup. Included: *A maths activity for children to calculate the distances between the World Cup stadiums and convert the units. *A maths game involving children representing a country and answering a maths question to score a ‘goal’. Then competing against other countries to win the final. *Mathematical word problems (and answers) involving the Russian Currency. *2 activities were children engage with designing their own fantasy World cup jersey and team. *A maths activity involving children identifying the co-ordinates in which Ronaldo passes to his team mates. Each activity has already sold numerous times on TES and TpT, so by bundling them together I hope it to be of some benefit. I really hope you enjoy these resources as much as my class and I did. Angles in a Triangle within a Triangle, and Angles on a Straight Line; Worksheet Generator; Answers

Easy to use worksheet generator, involving students having to find angles within a larger triangles. Involving the knowlede of identifying triangles, finding the angles within invidual triangles, and angles on a straight line. This is a worksheet generator so and infinite number of questions can be generated from this one resource. Therefore, this is great as a settler activity over a number of lessons, as it’s general structure stays the same whilst the numbers change for each worksheet. Also, it can show progress over time, as students should get quicker and become more confident at answering these questions.

Coordinates Castle Picture (Plotting coordinates on a grid to create a castle)

Powerpoint and worksheet plotting coordinates on a grid (-10 to +10 axis). The picture builds up to create a castle image. Suitable for years 6 to 9 depending on ability. Once coloured in, this activity is great for making a classroom wall display. I have used this in years 7,8 and 9 they all enjoyed it, just allow more time for the younger ones to finish. Extension idea: Create your own image with coordinates on a blank grid for other pupils to try.

Building a park

Students to use compound shapes (most including a circular part) to create a plan of a new park trying to use the most of the surface area. Students to then work out how much of the area they have used by working out the areas of the individual pieces of equipment. Area and Perimeter Treasure Hunt

Smatboard file duplicated on PDF with a 10 question treasure hunt at two different levels. Students to select the correct answer on all 10 questions that relate to a letter, They are to then unscramble the letters to find a word. Answer is Pythagoras.

Area of a Trapezium - Finding missing lengths

I wanted something a little more challenging on the topic of Trapezia that still gave my students plenty of practice calculating areas, so I designed these questions. In each question, students are given a pair of trapezia and are told how their areas are linked (one is a multiple of the other). Students have to determine the area of one trapezium, use that to determine the area of the other one, and then finally use that to determine a missing value. Sheets I and II are very similar, but sheet III is a bit more challenging. Solutions are provided.

Area of Shapes - Random Q Generator

Random Question Generator as a starter/plenary on the topic of area of shapes (rectangles, triangles, parallelograms, trapeziums). Suitable for up to 32 students (questions can be deleted where necessary). Questions are of varying levels of difficulty and can therefore be assigned to different students to differentiate by ability. When started, the slides will loop continuously until the back arrow is pressed, which will stop on a random student’s name and question. This activity works really well as a lesson starter as it keeps all students on their toes, waiting for their name to appear!

Functional Skills Maths Mandy's Misconceptions

Having reviewed the examiners reports for functionals skills (key quotes included) for the last 12 months and noticing common misconceptions in class I have put together 17 Functional Skills Maths revision questions. They are functional skills questions answered incorrectly . The learners have to answer correctly and explain why Mandy was wrong. This has worked really well to promote higher order thinking to identify errors. Area and perimeter garden design project

For Year 6, and lower Secondary School Design a garden plan using compound rectilinear shapes. Using formulae, children calculate the area and perimeter of each area of the garden. Using a price list, the children then work out the total cost of the different surfaces they are using. Working to a budget. Great for building methodical working strategies.

Regular Polygon Area Problems

This is a problem solving activity/worksheet that tests multiple levels of understanding related to the topic of area of regular polygons. They are high-level problems to test the most able, although a hint/formula sheet is included to help “differentiate down”. Also included is a differentiated/scaffolded sheet to help break the questions down, too for lower ability. Overall use of surds, Pythagoras Theorem and area formula for polygons are tested. Answers are provided in both surd format and to 2 decimals places.

Area of compound/composite shapes

The power point has been attached to allow for easy changes to be made and to duplicate questions with different numbers etc. Differentiated questions are attached on a printable word document. Colour coordinated for visual. From basic compound shapes of two rectangles, moving on to include parallelograms, triangles and trapeziums. Final challenge will include circles and problem solving. I laminated these cards and used mini whiteboards to take the children outside of the classroom. The worksheet is further practice and is not something I created myself, but useful for consolidation as a homework. Also differentiated.

Area of a Parallelogram Problem Solving (Substitution)

A task I designed to make my lesson on the area of a parallelogram a little more interesting! Students are given a variety of parallelograms where the side lengths are algebraic expressions. Students are given 9 possible values for x and have to substitute these values into the parallelograms, and then calculate their areas. Their aim is to create parallelograms with given areas. Solutions are provided.

FIFA World Cup 2018: Maths Activities

FIFA WORLD CUP 2018 is HERE! Coming from a ‘football crazy’ class, I knew my class would want to spend the end of year engaging with content based around the FIFA world cup. This resource involves the whole class and is a way to consolidate maths through the World Cup. I have included: PPT for the names of 30 children PPT for the names/groups of the countries in the World Cup Scoreboard to track who is winning/competing against who. Research sheet to engage children with the country they chose Over 45 different maths questions WITH answers Game rules Example of a layout of who plays who Children names will be drawn from a hat along with a country. They will then be representing this country in the game. Children will roll a dice 6 times. If either competing team rolls a 6, this equates to one goal IF they can answer the a maths question (included) correctly. If they get it incorrect, the goal has been saved by their opponent. Aimed at KS2. Can be eaily adapted for your children too. In my class, there are only 18 students, but I have included enough for 30. (As there is 2 extra teams, the first two children ‘out’ can come back in. An exhilarating, fun activity for those ‘End of Year’ days that we all crave activities for. We really enjoyed it :)
