Area Puzzles

5 fun Area and Perimeter Hidden Word / Spot the Mistakes Puzzles (and solutions) for Key Stage 2 (KS2) Year 5 and Year 6 and equivalents, which will also suit some early KS3. There's a puzzle for each of the following: Area of Squares and Rectangles, Perimeter of Squares and Rectangles, Area of Right-Angled Triangles and two further puzzles on Compound / Composite Shapes (2 star - more challenging plus a 1 star – less challenging). This resource is also available as part of an Area and Perimeter Activities BUNDLE, alongside Bingo / Lotto Games and Four in a Row Games: An engaging alternative to worksheets, these minimal preparation, ready-to-print puzzles make ideal starter, early finisher or homework activities. Designed in colour, they print fine in black and white too. To save on printing they could be laminated for completion with a whiteboard pen and kept for future years. Alternatively, put them in dry-erase plastic sleeves, meaning other pupils could use them later. Similar to codebreaker puzzles, a measure-related word is revealed after completing area or perimeter calculations. Each puzzle contains a grid. Within each box is a shape and a letter. Pupils circle any letters above incorrectly calculated areas or perimeters. Then they assemble letters from the circled boxes to reveal the hidden word. Puzzles can be completed individually or in pairs / groups. Pupils often forget or avoid checking their work for errors so it’s great to get them carefully checking in these puzzles. Spotting common errors may help them remember to check their own work and help them avoid common errors themselves. I have a growing collection of Maths and Literacy Hidden Word Puzzles, including this high-selling bundle, which includes more than 20 puzzles for Rounding, Multiplication, Negative Numbers and Fractions: Maths Puzzles These seasonal Mental Maths puzzles are also popular: Christmas Mental Maths Puzzles Halloween Maths Puzzles My Crossnumber Puzzle Packs are also popular, such as this one: Mental Maths Puzzles Year 5 / 6 Thank you for your interest in my resources. Areas of 2D Shapes: BODMAS, and Algebra Problem Solving

Areas of 2D Shapes: BODMAS, and Algebra Problem Solving

7 page pdf booklet. Reminders of the rules (along with shape diagrams with dimensions) for obtaining the areas of squares, rectangles, triangles, rhombuses, parallelograms, and trapeziums are provided. There are 10 questions asking students to find missing areas, heights and widths using number values required for substitution into formulae provided for such 2D shapes. Three example algebraic problems are then reviewed and full workings (with reminders about BODMAS) provided: 1) Substitution of an x value into length and width expressions to find a missing area of a rectangle; 2) Finding the value of x given an area value for a rectangle, and length and width in terms of x; 3) Finding the value of x and a width given expressions in x for opposite lengths in a rectangle as well as its value of area. These examples are followed by another 10 questions for more able students requiring substitution of algebraic terms into such area formulae as per the 3 examples provided.
