#### 007 Problem-solving, geometry puzzle, G&T yr7

The problem of the dropped box of matches, pt 1 “Isabella Ringing dropped a box of matches, the box opened and the matches went everywhere. As she went to pick them up she knocked some of them into different positions. This gave her an idea for some puzzles to set for her friends.” A set of six matchstick puzzles to promote problem-solving skills - part 1 of 2. Suggested that it is used alongside ‘sticks’ of some sort so that kids can physcially explore the problem. We Solve Problems is a charity, founded by three PhD mathematicians, whose aim is to promote the use of advanced mathematics within secondary schools. We want to encourage creative mathematical thinking, to develop a skill within pupils for presenting their results clearly and coherently, as well as promoting personal problem-solving skills. Visit us at wesolveproblems. org. uk. We would very much appreciate it if you could take time to follow us, and hopefully review this resource as well, as this helps others to find us. Thank you.

#### TESSELLATION - NOT JUST A FRIDAY AFTERNOON FUN ACTIVITY!

Year7/8 scheme of work. Includes 11 lesson plans, assessment and worksheets. Aim is for students to develop strategies to apply mathematical reasoning in practical situations. Develop their understanding of geometry to include 2-D shapes and transformations. Lesson plans need to be supplemented by selected questions from text book or worksheets.

#### Rotation support

A 'hands on tool' to support pupils understanding of rotation. The two disc are to be cut out and joined using a split-pin, or similar. Pupils can use the tool to track basic rotations (clockwise and anti-clockwise) by placing the tracing over the scale. Designed for a very low ability year 7 class, very well received.

#### Complete transformations of shapes (translation, reflection, rotation and enlargement)

Over the years I have built up a rather hefty transformations notebook file. I believe this includes everything that needs to be included to be able to teach everything on transformations of shapes (including stretching the most able as well as scaffolding for lower ability). It includes activities which can be taken off and used as a worksheet (some answers included) as well as quizzes (with answers as well). This is my go to for any year group throughout KS3 and KS4 when teaching transformations as i can pick out the best bits. I hope this is useful for your too. Enjoy! After the transformations there are some slides on congruent triangles, similarity and symmetry as this can lead on nicely after transformations.

#### Physics Bundle

10 Physic lessons on Energy, Grid References, Hooke's Law, Kinetic energy, Spring, momentum and potential. Fun engaging and creative lesson plans to ensure students enjoy Physics.

#### Defuse The Bomb January 2018 Bundle

Twenty three "defuse the bomb" worksheets and answers on various topics including vectors, inequalities (solving, number lines and regions), shapes, bearings, rearranging formulae, transforming functions, trigonometry in right-angled triangles, similarity and surface area. These are self-marking to the extent that if their answer doesn't appear in the list of possible answers then they need to check what they've done which allows students to just get on and grow in confidence.

#### Transformations Matching Card Sort

Students first group the cards in to the four types of transformations. This will promote discussion of how to spot each type. Then students match each card to a description. Many of the descriptions are similar, promoting discussion of common misconceptions. There is also one extra description of each type of transformation. This is to stop students from not checking the last of each transformation, but also allows students to draw each type of transformation. This activity would be an ideal way to lead in to 'Describing Transformations' after covering 'Drawing Transformations'.

#### Mix Maths Strand Bundle

A great bundle containing 20 lessons including lesson plans, differentation, assessment, plenary, tasks and engaging lesson covering Handling data, Numbers, Geometry and Shapes and Algebra. This is a great diverse range of lessons with progression where all the lessons are planned in detail suited to deliver KS2, KS3 and KS4 syllabus.

#### Match Statements: Congruent Triangle

**Thank you to Corbett maths for one of the questions!** I used this with a Year 11 class who was predicted 3-5. There are 4 exam questions, on the top of the sheet there are all the correct statements to build the proof. I cut the sheets in two, so that the statements was on one sheet and the questions on another, this way the confident students can be stretched by having no help. Please tell me how you used or would amend this resource!

#### Similar shapes, length, area, volume. Scale factors, relationships.

Class teaching tool for 'seeing the relationships between' 1d, 2d and 3d shapes in terms of scale factors.

#### Similar Shapes Summary

Exploration into similar triangles through drawing enlargements on an A3 sheet - students can decorate and make patterns etc. This leads into your own teaching about similarity. Then, my Smartboard lesson to summarize the properties of similarity, and how scale factors affect areas and volumes, with a worksheet that goes alongside the presentation. Smartboard objects show nicely how several of the original 2-D or 3-D shapes fit into the enlargement.
