Where was the free kick taken from? - Photos, football and algebraic fractions

Inspired by a Numberphile video where they use still images to calculate the position of a footballer taking a free kick (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffvojZONF_A) Resource is aimed at GCSE groups (higher) and will need at least an hour. Students are given four photographs and instructions that allow them to calculate where each player was standing when they took the free kick by measuring distances on the photographs and computing cross-ratios. They then have to solve a simple algebraic fraction equation to work out the unknown distance. Included: presentation to help explain the tasks, worksheet with photographs and an additional sheet that scaffolds the process if needed, set of exemplar answers. Students can draw any straight line they like from the ball to the goal so they will have different distances in their cross ratio but should end up with the same final answers. Potentially leads to discussion opportunities about how the cross-ratio changes with the players position and even an introduction to limits as you consider what happens if the player is very close to or very far away from the penalty area. *Presentation edited to include extension tasks incorporating using trig to find the kick angle and problem solving to work out the location of a different player and flight path of a pass followed by a shot **Answers updated to include challenge 1 and 2

Students will need to know how to round to significant figures and decimal places in order to access this lesson fully. I created them so that I was able to test my classes more regularly on topics at different points through the year - each test is similar enough so that classes hopefully improve at the “standard” questions but there is also some variety in the later questions in each test and a progression in difficulty as you go through the tests. In the full set of 18 tests there are 5 tests designed to be done with a calculator, 13 tests to be done without a calculator. A challenging activity on the theme of triangle area, suitable for year 11 revision. The initial questions require a knowledge of basic triangle area, Pythagoras’ theorem, SOHCAHTOA, the sine rule and 1/2absinC so a good, challenging revision task. The questions have been designed with a ‘minimally diferent’ element, to draw pupils attention to how subtle changes can have significant implications for selecting methods. There are some follow-up questions, that could be used to shift the focus of the activity. I’d love to hear anyone’s suggestions of further questions.

I did this as a review at the end of a week teaching Pythagoras to a middle set year 10. I got them to split into teams and set it as a challenge to see who could get the correct list of destinations first. the questions are coloured with hypotenuse, then shorter side and finally worded questions. (no 3D). The map has extra symbols on so they can’t just use the triangle letter! As it was a review the activity took around 20 - 30 minutes and kept the students engaged.
