Area and Volume of Similar shapes

Area and Volume of Similar shapes

A full lesson for higher ability students looking at and answering exam style questions on the relationship between scale factor and area and volume. The lesson starts with some exam style recap questions on similarity and lengths, and has a ‘create a markscheme’ activity at the end. Any feedback is welcome!

TESSELLATION - NOT JUST A FRIDAY AFTERNOON FUN ACTIVITY!

TESSELLATION - NOT JUST A FRIDAY AFTERNOON FUN ACTIVITY!

Year7/8 scheme of work. Includes 11 lesson plans, assessment and worksheets. Aim is for students to develop strategies to apply mathematical reasoning in practical situations. Develop their understanding of geometry to include 2-D shapes and transformations. Lesson plans need to be supplemented by selected questions from text book or worksheets.

Rotation support

Rotation support

A 'hands on tool' to support pupils understanding of rotation. The two disc are to be cut out and joined using a split-pin, or similar. Pupils can use the tool to track basic rotations (clockwise and anti-clockwise) by placing the tracing over the scale. Designed for a very low ability year 7 class, very well received.

Complete transformations of shapes (translation, reflection, rotation and enlargement)

Complete transformations of shapes (translation, reflection, rotation and enlargement)

Over the years I have built up a rather hefty transformations notebook file. I believe this includes everything that needs to be included to be able to teach everything on transformations of shapes (including stretching the most able as well as scaffolding for lower ability). It includes activities which can be taken off and used as a worksheet (some answers included) as well as quizzes (with answers as well). This is my go to for any year group throughout KS3 and KS4 when teaching transformations as i can pick out the best bits. I hope this is useful for your too. Enjoy! After the transformations there are some slides on congruent triangles, similarity and symmetry as this can lead on nicely after transformations.

Defuse The Bomb January 2018 Bundle

Defuse The Bomb January 2018 Bundle

Twenty three "defuse the bomb" worksheets and answers on various topics including vectors, inequalities (solving, number lines and regions), shapes, bearings, rearranging formulae, transforming functions, trigonometry in right-angled triangles, similarity and surface area. These are self-marking to the extent that if their answer doesn't appear in the list of possible answers then they need to check what they've done which allows students to just get on and grow in confidence.

GCSE Maths Higher Starter Revision Questions

GCSE Maths Higher Starter Revision Questions

Revision Questions to use as starters in class. Best printed as A5 handouts for students and then easily and quickly marked by the teacher once handed in. Tried in class and it worked well, students found them challenging and useful as reminders of things they have forgotten how to do.

Transformations Matching Card Sort

Transformations Matching Card Sort

Students first group the cards in to the four types of transformations. This will promote discussion of how to spot each type. Then students match each card to a description. Many of the descriptions are similar, promoting discussion of common misconceptions. There is also one extra description of each type of transformation. This is to stop students from not checking the last of each transformation, but also allows students to draw each type of transformation. This activity would be an ideal way to lead in to 'Describing Transformations' after covering 'Drawing Transformations'.

Hint sheet for area and volume in similar shapes

Hint sheet for area and volume in similar shapes

Hint sheet with key facts / examples for area and volume in similar shapes. Good to give to students as reminder when completing exam questions on the topic. I always encourage students to do the bigger divided by the smaller to find the scale factor - then always times by the scale factor to go from small to big, divide by it to go from big to small.
