Homework resources to help further learning in secondary science

It is important to help students to continue their learning outside of the classroom and extend their understanding further. Setting homework that is challenging and interesting can be tricky and time-consuming so, to help you out, we have gathered together some homework resources that you can use with your secondary science pupils.

The Key Stage Three Science Stretch and Challenge Grid

The KS3 Science Stretch and Challenge Grid is one of the easiest ways to stretch and challenge the thinking of your students.

The resource combines three separate grids. The first contains 25 subject-specific questions and tasks mapped to the curriculum. The second contains 25 challenging tasks applicable to any area of the curriculum. The third is blank, ready to edit.

Simply print off one of the grids and give copies to your most-able students. You can then challenge them to complete tasks and questions during lessons or as part of their homework. Students can keep track by crossing off challenges as they complete them.

The resource also comes with a set of badges students can collect and tick off as they finish each task or question.

With the KS3 Science Stretch and Challenge Grid you will be stretching and challenging the thinking of your students every time you teach, saving time along the way!

The Periodic Table Crossword Science Starter Keywords Activity KS3 GCSE Cover Homework

Crossword on the theme of 'The Periodic Table'.

Powerpoint so can be used on the board or printed as a worksheet.

Includes space for students to explain the keywords and suggested extension activities. Can take 10 minutes or an hour, depending on which activities the students complete.

Ideal for the start of a lesson, a quick filler, a homework, part of a cover lesson or as a plenary on the board with a whiteboard pen.

The idea behind these is to get students to become more literate and think independently about the words that could be used to describe the topic being taught. The repetition of the word over and over as they look for the word is useful in remembering the terms. Often the students will pick up on things that you would not normally expect!
