Classroom display (connectives ranging from easy to hard)

Classroom display (connectives ranging from easy to hard)

The single most important resource I’ve ever used, this easy to assemble display means you have instant scaffolding for students of all abilities. Everytime you want them to write something, all you need to do is set a minimum number of connectives to use. Over time, students get used to looking up to find a new one; they also have a way of challenging themselves to use more advanced language because they are colour-coded. Any writing task I set, I always refer to this display and give students specific targets about how they should extend their French sentences. Anytime we do a speaking exercise, this display forms the backbone. A lot of the resources I create, including all the French ones I have uploaded to TES, use language taken from this display. This is the key to all those resources. I cannot emphasise enough how useful a display like this has been in my classroom. I was soon noticing that the best students would note down a few of the better connectives to use when recording their homework, just so that they could make sure they used their best French.

French idioms worksheet

French idioms worksheet

For extra fluency, use idioms. But how do we get students to appreciate the meaning behind the sometimes bizarre literal translations? Make the bizarre literal translations the point of the exercise. It doesn’t take much to work this into your lesson, and you effectively only need to do it once because the students will have a copy of the idioms waiting to be used, whenever they think to use them. The students only need a dictionary. If you want to make it harder, give them a limit to how many words they can get translated for them (say, 3) and you use an online dictionary to show them what they mean. That way they need to look carefully at the phrases, work out what stumps them most, and get help for the phrases that they are least likely to be able to work out themselves. The second sheet is the answer sheet.

French film adjectives match-up

French film adjectives match-up

Yes, this is an activity which requires some cutting out. The good news is that you only need to do it once because the cards can be stored for future years or for spontaneous progress checks throughout the year. Numbered cards contain a French or English word in each, so each French word has a matching translation. To make life easier, when checking the matches, each card has a number so you can display 2 columns on the board, one for French and one for English, and show the number combinations that make the match. You might prefer, instead, to get students to suggest the match and then to ask students, as they give their answers, to use the French word in a sentence. If they are correct, they can a bonus point for their extra correct answer. I laminate my match-up card sets because, well, students are students. This is great for starters, plenaries and for progress checks during the year. Often, if students are struggling to justify their opinions, I’ll drop one of these envelopes on their desk so they can find an adjective they like. If you do that, you might also want them to translate their sentence so that you know they’re not just picking a French adjective without knowing its meaning. This is nothing fancy, just bread and butter stuff that makes life a bit easier.

Pupil Collective Response Marking Template

Pupil Collective Response Marking Template

This is a great way to save time marking, yet provide detailed feedback to the whole class. Headings can be adapted, but they focus on the main aspects of improving pupils’ work, such as what they did well, how they can improve, along with grammar and spelling issues, along with praising those in the class that went above and beyond. This can be used in any subject.

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire - Revision Game

This game can be used for all subjects and for all abilities. There are brief explanations on how to change things to match your subject in the notes page on the first two slides. All you need to do is write in your questions and answers and it will do the rest. I have titled “correct answer” on each question enry so if you click it it will move you up the money board. Click an incorrect one and it will tell you it’s wrong and you lose. Classes I have used this with have really enjoyed it and it has prompted whole class discussion.

FRENCH CONVERSATION CARDS 1&2

FRENCH CONVERSATION CARDS 1&2

My students have always enjoyed and really benefited from these FRENCH conversation cards. They’re perfect for developing speaking skills - there are 200 question and answer cards and two reference booklets focusing on beginning/general conversation and cultural knowledge. They’re also great for multi-skill language learning - they give your students structured talk opportunities and will also get them listening, reading and writing. They’re ideal for independent learning, and perfect for pair and small-group work. These sets focus on beginning conversation, with a flavor of cultural and geographical knowledge. The prompt cards also feature language and structures that your students are likely to meet in the beginning and more intermediate stages of their FRENCH learning, including a range of tenses. The REFERENCE BOOKLETS include all the questions and answers written out in FRENCH. Students find these very useful learning support resources and they’re also handy whole-group pronunciation practice and reading-out loud resources. Students use the NOTES AND NEXT STEPS template to reflect on their learning, and think about what they might reasonably do to progress in their learning. The QUESTION AND ANSWER WRITING CARD TEMPLATES give students the opportunity to apply their FRENCH very practically, as they create both questions and answers for each other. This is a great team activity too. You can also use the cards for a whole range of games, and I’ve described how to play several you can start with. The resource consists of four non-editable files in a zipped format: SET 1 PROMPT CARDS with writing template and REFERENCE BOOKLET SET 2 PROMPT CARDS with writing template and REFERENCE BOOKLET The sets are also available individually if you prefer, each priced at $4.00. Please read the TERMS OF USE carefully: this resource is copyright, and for single-teacher / classroom / purchaser use only. MERCI BEAUCOUP ET BONNE CONVERSATION !

holiday activities using nous + present tense

holiday activities using nous + present tense

I created this resource to support Y8 on their unit 5 in the Studio book. Starting with the very basic nous + present tense expressions, I made a table with more complex structures to show students how they can extend their sentences. This worksheet has a big match-up exercise and a writing task. Ideal for beginners. Covers the topic of typical holiday activities.

French writing paragraph of the week - Full year French writing program

French writing paragraph of the week - Full year French writing program

**Full year French writing program - 50 French writing activities - Écriture sans préparation ** This whole year French writing program will have your students writing every day. Each of the fifty writing activities in this program includes five pre-writing and writing activities for Monday through Friday. These writing prompts are a great way both to introduce and to review writing. Provide each student with a paragraphe de la semaine folder and have them add to it every day as you give them daily assignments. At the end of the week have them turn in their folders. On Monday, you can start over again with a new theme. This paragraphe de la semaine writing resource contains 50 weeks worth of Monday through Friday prewriting and writing activities. When you purchase this French writing bundle you save 25% and as a bundle bonus you also get the same prompts in the form of speaking cards for differentiated learning. This encourages students to speak to each other in small groups using the same themes and vocabulary they’ve worked with through the writing program. For the speaking prompts, there is also a PDF with only one card per slide if you prefer to project the prompts or use them on tablets rather than printing. Use these weekly no prep writing activities with many different levels whether you teach primary immersion, primary core, or traditional middle and high school. You can easily modify the activities for older students. The themed prompts are suitable for any age. For older students you can just leave out the drawing activity and move through the others more quickly than you would with younger ones. Here are the themes included in set 1: ❶ le matin ❷ le week-end ❸ ma chambre ❹ je n’ai pas peur ❺ ma matière préférée ❻ les vacances ❼ les voisins ❽ la pizza ❾ la pluie ❿ l’école Here are the themes included in set 2: ❶ la personne que j’admire le plus ❷ mon anniversaire ❸ mon repas préféré ❹ les restaurants ❺ les sports ❻ après l’école ❼ les vêtements ❽ mon quartier ❾ notre salle de classe ❿ les émotions Here are the themes included in set 3: ❶ l’hiver ❷ mes parents ❸ j’étais fier ❹ je n’aime pas manger ❺ les devoirs ❻ être heureux ❼ un château de sable ❽ le soir ❾ j’ai peur ❿ bien élevé Here are the themes included in set 4: ❶ une cabane dans les arbres ❷ je n’aime vraiment pas manger ❸ un bon sandwich ❹ rester en bonne santé ❺ le samedi après-midi ❻ quand je serai adulte ❼ la piscine un parc d’attractions ❾ le zoo ❿ trois souhaits Here are the themes included in set 5: ❶ si j’étais invisible ❷ si j’étais un serpent ❸ la mer ❹ la montagne ❺ la télévision ❻ la lune ❼ voyager dans le temps ❽ si je savais voler ❾ les notes ❿ sous mon lit Here’s how this writing program works: ✍Lundi: Je dessine - Give students a drawing page with a writing prompt at the top. This will have them beginning to think about the writing theme for the week and is their first pre-writing assignment. Kids love drawing, and the pictures they draw will later serve as inspiration! ✍Mardi: Mon livret de vocabulaire - Each student receives a booklet to help them explore the vocabulary related to the week’s writing theme. The front page includes the writing prompt of the week and an image. The second page includes over 80 frequently used French words. Page three lists 12 words that go along with the theme of the week, and the back page has space for ten words that students have either thought of on their own or looked up in the dictionary. The booklet is a simple one page printable that you can either fold in advance or have students do it on their own. Kids write their name on the front cover and you could have them color it. ✍Mercredi: Vocabulaire - Students go back to their vocabulary booklets from Tuesday and choose ten words that they will include in their rough draft. The words they choose can be a combination of words they have chosen and themed vocabulary that was already written in the booklet. They then write down the chosen words on their vocabulary page that says “ Mots de vocabulaire utiles: J’utiliserai ces mots dans mon paragraphe.” ✍Jeudi: Mon brouillon - Students write a rough draft of their paragraph using the vocabulary words selected on Wednesday. The brouillon page includes a 5 point checklist at the top for students to evaluate their work for themselves before writing the final copy on Friday. This will motivate students to look over their work and make corrections. ✍Vendredi: Ma copie propre - The fifth and final step in this writing program is to write the final copy. Students should feel very confident in writing about this week’s theme by now. At the top of the final copy page they’ll see the writing prompt and question words that they can ask themselves while writing: qui - quoi - quand - où - pourquoi - comment ** Ways you can use this writing program:** ✎ Enhance your writing program by practicing a little every day. ✎ Use the prompts at writing centers Monday - Friday. ✎ Daily 5 rotations ✎ Homework ✎ Writing centers ✎ Fast finishers ✎ Tutoring sessions ✎ No prep sub materials ✎ Morning work ✎ Project on whiteboard for a whole class speaking activity
