Hello Busy Educator! How Social Media Can Help You in Your Teaching Job Hunt When it comes to job hunting, sometimes prospective teachers don’t use social media very well. So, keep only those things on it that you would like to share with everyone. Teachers have to maintain a leading role so it’s best to keep your profile clean and professional. Here are some ways in which social media can help your job hunt. For more information, please visit www.TheBusyEducator.com

Hearing is Seeing - improve descriptive writing with film

Hearing is Seeing - improve descriptive writing with film

Into Film’s series of Industry Visits, which brings film industry talent into schools across the UK, saw Veronika Hyks, Head of Audio Description at BTI Studios, visiting young people at Lent Rise Primary School in Slough. Audio description (AD) is the verbal description of film images to support the experience of visually impaired audiences. Creating AD narratives provides a wonderful opportunity for descriptive writing in the classroom or as part of an Into Film Club. Using literacy techniques during a practical workshop, Veronika encouraged the children at Lent Primary to encourage them to write their own descriptions, using a clip from Disney’s Frozen. Keeping their eyes closed, the children were asked to listen to the dialogue and sounds used in the clip, and imagined what the experience might be like to someone who is visually impaired. They then had a go at writing their own audio descriptions, using descriptive words and thinking about how tense could be used. Veronika tasked the children with reading their own descriptions out loud alongside the clip, helping them to think about rhythm and pace, and using the sounds and dialogue to bring the clip to life. Watch the video above to see how they got on, and to hear Veronika discuss audio-description in her own words. Visit www.intofilm,org for details on how to start an Into Film Club for resources, exclusive industry careers advice and more.

Life Goals! A motivational and interactive workbook

Life Goals! A motivational and interactive workbook

This workbook has been designed as an interactive, thought provoking and interesting guide to life for those disenfranchised students that need that extra motivation and support in school and designed by a school SENCO. It has 14 pages packed full of questions, activities, puzzles and tasks, all designed to make students question, what am I doing this for? It can be used with students who have been removed from mainstream lessons/placed in an isolation room, students that have arrived on a placement from another school, or even just to help students look at what they want their future to be! It has been highly successful in it’s current setting, and works best when a student is working individually, or as part of a group with teacher facilitation, it gives an opportunity for you to learn more about a student, what motivates them, makes them tick, and what you can do to support them where perhaps others are currently failing. Designed as a running document with fun rest breaks in between, student feedback has been overwhelmingly positive! Especially the equipment Maze!

Still Looking For A Teaching Job? Follow This Checklist

Still Looking For A Teaching Job? Follow This Checklist

Teaching is the dream profession of many young graduates. It gives them a chance to be heard and share their knowledge with others. It’s a great profession for those who have leadership skills and want to be social. If you have applied to a number of teaching positions and still haven’t become successful, here’s a checklist for you: Consider moving Instead of limiting your job search to your neighboring schools and colleges, send the applications to big schools even if they are far away. If you get selected, you can always move to another city. After all, a job at a premiere college or school will be a great move for your career. Get your paperwork ready Make sure you have your resume, cover letter, and other documents ready. Proofread your resume several times to make sure it does not have any mistakes. Be available on social networks Your presence on social media networks like LinkedIn can help you build connections. If you are connected to administrators from colleges and schools, there are chances that they will prefer you over others when it’s time to hire. Attend job fairs Attend the job fairs held at your alma mater along with those at the neighboring colleges and universities. You have better chances of being selected at your alma mater than the others. Prepare for the interview There are some questions that are asked frequently. For example, “what can you bring to this school” and “how do you plan to influence the students”. Come up with witty and professional answers for these questions. Share vignettes Be open during the interview and share some positive vignettes about your previous experiences. These could include student achievements, classroom management, and unique teaching methodologies that you follow. Follow-up Sometimes the college or school might take extra time in hiring. If you follow up using emails, there are higher chances of you being hired. When you email them, state again that you would love to work with them. Stay positive It’s a tough economy but teaching positions keep opening every now and then in various schools and colleges. Don’t give up hope and you’ll soon bag a great teaching job. That’s it for now Busy Educator. Until next time, Talk to each other, support each other, take care of each other.’ Marjan

Setting Goals

Setting Goals

Setting Goals Project Use this project with your students as a way to explore goal setting. You can use any or all of the pages. Tailor it to fit your students! Cover Sheets – There are 4 different versions of the cover sheet. Use the one that is appropriate for your students. The cover sheets are editable. Use the space to add information such as school, year, school mascot, or student’s name. Setting Goals – This page defines what a goal is and steps to achieve it. These can be short term or long term goals. The goals can be academic or personal. It could be as easy as not being tardy to class or as ambitious as going from a failing grade to achieving a 4.0. Set the parameters with your students. This allows the activity to be tailored to either a group or individual student. This can also be a class poster. It is available in both color and black/white. Individual Goal Sheet– Writing out goals is a great way to visualize success. Students will write out the goal, target date, steps to achieve the goal. As they are working on the goal, they can document any adjustments made during the process. Once complete, they can record accomplishments and the date completed. Print several for students to set multiple goals. **Best VS Worst **– Everyone has a strength and a weakness. These sheets allow students to understand how they can use their strength and improve their weakness. **Goal Sheet **– Students can track individual goals start and end dates on this page. It is a mini version of the individual goal sheet. Goal Reflection – Once a goal is achieved, it is good to reflect. This worksheet walks the student through a reflection exercise about the goal. **Letter to Yourself **- Students write a letter to their present and future selves. You can designate the year you want the future self to be. They can record who they are today and what they want to achieve. There is a list of prompts to help you get the students started or to use as a discussion prior to the assignment. There are several versions of the clipart to accommodate different levels of students. **5 Year Plan **– Use this sheet for students to set goals for themselves and how they plan to achieve them. Education, Health, Travel, **Positive Thinking **– Use this sheet to reinforce the power of positive thinking and reflections. Students will think about what they have done yesterday, what they are doing today, and what they will do tomorrow to achieve a goal. Use this as a standalone worksheet or with the goal sheet and reflection sheet. This can also be used as a daily writing prompt sheet.
