PaperWorks: KS3 Design & Technology – Pack 5: Paper and Cardboard Packaging

PaperWorks Pack 5 is a graphics-based resource for 11 to 14 year olds. The resource challenges students to respond to a realistic packaging design brief, by creating a logo and brand, then designing a packaging solution based on the ‘shelf-ready packaging’ (SRP) requirements that are now commonly specified by customers of the cardboard packaging industry. There are four different briefs so you can adapt the resource to the varying needs of your class. Students can work individually, in pairs or small teams and we expect the project to take three or four lessons, but you can adapt it as you see fit to meet your own needs. During their work, students reflect on the aesthetic, economic and environmental values of cardboard packaging, create and assess prototypes and use hand drawing, Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM) systems to model their ideas. PaperWorks Pack 5 offers the opportunities to: • Teach students how to respond to a design brief requiring the creation of a logo and the development of a prototype packaging solution for a product. • Develop students’ understanding of how logos are used in the branding of products and the importance of colour, text and imagery. • Challenge students to design a logo by considering and arranging text, images and information to suit the target market. • Teach students about cardboard packaging, its environmental, economic and aesthetic qualities and how it is used, considering real life examples of cardboard packaging and logo designs. • Develop students’ drawing skills by sketching different boxes, then evaluating and choosing the best option. • Develop students’ CAD system skills by accurately designing a prototype box. • Help students model their prototype using CAM or scissors and evaluate how effective it is in relation to the customer’s brief and to suggest improvements that should be made. My students really love this microcontroller project. The project utilises the Genie C08 Microcontroller. I give the students a pre-made project (they develop the flow chart to program the chip). This project includes an E-Portfolio template to guide students through the design and make activity. (Homework tasks are also included) There is a week by week guide to be used to set lesson objectives. Also included is a 2D design template, flowchart and PCB files. Students will learn how to program a microcontroller to respond to changes in an analogue signal. There is also an emphasis on analysis and evaluation with prompts referring to ACCESSFM.

This Latching alarm project is a great way to introduce students to the role of the thyristor. The students can follow the guide to design their own PCBs. My students use a key switch and magnetic proximity switch, they love the idea that if someone breaks into their room then they won't be able to turn the alarm off unless they have the key! My students make a vacuum formed case, there is a 2D design file included within the zipped file, you can use this as a starting point to make your mould, or you can just make your own. Included is an E-Portfolio template with great instructions showing students what they need to do. The weekly how 2 guide can be used to set lesson objectives. There is an emphasis on independent learning and analysis. Homework activities support learning.

Everything you need to make run an amplifier project. Aimed at year 8 the PCB is made in school (circuit wizard file in zipped file). We use and MDF frame and glue the front and back into place. Unlike the kitronik version, my version has a switch and an LED within the circuit. This project in a box includes a class booklet, homework booklet, printable guide showing students how to populate the circuit and a weekly presentation that you can use to help students through the various steps. Images are used to show students exactly what they need to do. My students love the freedom of following the guide themselves.

This project has everything you need to run a steady hand game project. Aimed at KS3 the class booklet introduces simple concepts such as resistance values and thyristor pin names. The booklet also covers designing, analysis of ideas and evaluating the final outcome. The homework booklet reinforces learning. There are also a range of extension tasks. You will find a week by week pictorial guide showing students what to do, there is also a pictorial circuit population guide that you can print off, I have them laminated so they can be reused time after time. Students really enjoy the freedom of being able to follow the guide themselves. I have included zipped 2D design files for the case and zipped PCB files compatible with circuit wizard that can be used to make your PCB's. My students love this project. I hope your do too.

Eduqas Design Technology E-Textiles Project Sketchbook Guide

Based upon the Eduqas Design Technology course, the attached file is intended to be used along side my E-Textiles project, but it could be adapted as required and used as a guide and support for other projects using a sketchbook. The Example sketch book includes Task analysis, Research and Design Ideas example pages, all based around the sketch book idea. The attached guide gives students step by step instructions about what should go on the page. Use this on it's own, or alongside the Sketchbook example and the Presentation Folder guide and Presentation Folder example. There is also a guide to creating a PCB using Circuit Wizard available as part of the bundle, plus a student Homework book to help the students to consolidate their learning.
