Engineering in the Movies allows pupils to explore the creative and practical side of STEM in the movie industry, whilst introducing the important role engineers have in the movie industry. Through 12 engaging activities, pupils will link topics taught in their subject lessons with applications in real world engineering. This resource provides hands-on thematic education opportunities to pupils interested in the magical world of movies that can be taught in the classroom and as an enrichment programme. The second looks at Boolean logic and logic circuits. The final activity involves the use of Formulae and Pythagoras in calculating damage in a video game. There is a worksheet for this activity too. It is designed to last around an hour. It was originally pitched for year 9 students, but would be suitable for 8 and 10. Comes with a powerpoint with key instructions and questions, along with 2 activity sheets.

This is an activity lesson I made to promote STEM / Computing / Maths. The activity involves the students working in groups to design, market and calculate costings for their own smartphones. It is a highly engaging activity getting students thinking about the key aspects including engineering decisions, financial calculations and helps develop managerial skills. Content includes choosing components for their phones, branding it, choosing materials, creating scale drawings, creating a promotional poster and presenting back to the class. It could easily be used as a whole year group event in a hall or similar venue, or on a smaller scale in lessons. It was originally pitched for year 9 students, but would be suitable for 8 and 10, and high ability year 7s. Comes with a powerpoint with key instructions, but focuses around the pack of worksheets which I print 2 to a page and give out 1 between 4.

Survival Invention BUNDLE (STEAM with Explanation Text)

This resource has been designed to be done alongside Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo, but can also be done independently of the novel study. Children will design survival inventions to withstand the environment of a remote island after a shipwreck. They will investigate different weather patterns in a specified area of the world before deciding on what they will need to survive. Children will be encouraged to use different diagrams (annotated, cross-sectional and exploded) to show their ideas before making and evaluating them. This bundle also includes the Explanation Outcome where children will explain their inventions according to the 2014 National Curriculum English Standards for Year 6. Bundle of  team work starters - Technology Timelines

Bundle of team work starters - Technology Timelines

A bundle of 5 different themed technology timeline starters featuring Inventions, Hardware, Computer Games, Females in Computing and Sci-Fi Films. These make great starters for any lesson or year group but are particularly good for GCSE Computer Science or IB courses to get them talking about influential individuals or pieces of technology. What you need to do is divide your class into mixed ability groups of 4 (pairs also work well) and give them a blank timeline board, the 17 events, and the set of 4 team cards. Each person needs to read out their card and see if they can put a few of the key events down (each card tells them the date of one event). They then need to use their team work skills to work out the dates for the other events not mentioned on their card, but that links to or is mentioned on another card. I would recommend laminating the blank timeline boards, team cards and the printable cards so that you can use several times with different classes. I printed off two copies of each board so that I had a couple of spares. Any teams that finished early were then given a new board to solve together. If several teams finished at the same time I got them to swap over their boards. Be vigilant about some of the cut up events going missing! I labelled on the back of the events what themed board they went with (e.g. CG2 = Computer Games Set 2) as I was worried about them getting jumbled up when I collected them in.
