Gandhi and the Caste System

Gandhi and the Caste System

This lesson is designed to be adaptable to the needs of your class. It can build on previous knowledge of Gandhi, and works best if that is the case, but can also be used as an introduction to Gandhi’s teaching and life. (To this end, I’ve included a link of him burning the passes and his famous non violence speech that followed it, which are both short and excellent insights into his teaching and philosophy. On non violence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKzKj_8CO2g Burning of the passes (ahimsa):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50gNryy9JnA) It includes extension tasks for able and talented, and differentiated activities including ethical dilemmas, youtube videos, group discussions, treasure hunts as well as written tasks. A broad range of activities, in my experience, always bosters engagement. (there is a need to print 10 slides here) The lesson aims to remind students’ of Gandhi’s teachings and inform them of the Caste system. There is also a short video about Narayanan Krishnan, an inspirational Hindu who has disregarded his Brahmin caste to help untouchables or down and outs in Indian Society. 2 differently worded Learning Objectives here for lower and higher ability or age groups: To remember who Gandhi was. to explain what the caste system was. To know Gandhi’s opinion of the untouchables. To develop and evaluate my own opinion about the caste system. To empathise with people who are in the caste system. Or, for KS4, All will be able to explain what the caste system was, and why Gandhi was against it. Most will be able to relate the situation to contemporary issues re: jobs and status. Some will be able to explain why the caste system became a source of prejudice and discrimination.

Could be used as whole class discussion or printed off as slides for groups to feedback main points, possibly as part of a research lesson gathering extra facts. -Overview - A3 sheet showing the photographs of all 10 people. Children fill in some biographical information and try to summarise the main points of for what they stood and the hardships they faced. This is probably more suited to an older or higher ability group. -Key Themes - A4 sheet with pictures and a list of key themes. Children match the key themes to the different characters, possibly as part of a group lesson where groups are feeding back research findings. -Balloon debate cards. A fun activity where groups of children have to persuade the rest of the class why their character deserves a place in a rapidly sinking balloon, rather than being thrown over the side. The cards can be cut out, they have the photograph of the character on one side and space for notes on the back. A good introduction to debating and persuasive speaking.

AQA A GCSE Theme F Human Rights and Social Justice: Lesson 2 Prejudice and Discrimination

AQA A GCSE Theme F Human Rights and Social Justice: Lesson 2 Prejudice and Discrimination

This is the 2nd lesson in the AQA A GCSE thematic unit of work for ‘Religion, Human Rights and Social Justice’ and it is focused on ‘Prejudice and Discrimination’. This lesson covers the equivalent of two sections of this theme as it looks at prejudice and discrimination in terms of: disability, sexuality, race and gender. The lesson is very comprehensive in terms of the information the students need for these sections, but it has been designed so that you could deliver it in 1-2 lessons depending on your time frame. The lesson has been fully resourced to a high standard with a range of differentiated tasks (using the good, better, ASPIRE system). The lesson is designed to challenge the students as well as make them familiar with new concepts, knowledge and how to apply their learning to the exam. There is a 12 mark exam question in this lesson so that the students are constantly being reminded of exam technique and what will be expected of them in terms of application of knowledge. I will be adding lessons on a weekly basis so please keep looking! If you choose to use this resource I would really appreciate a review.

There is a scheme of work to go with the powerpoint too. I have also written a three hour Flip Learning Project which substitutes some of the lessons as additional extra.
