Neurodiversity Strengths Checklist - useful for SEND and INCLUSION departments

Psychometric and neurocognitive assessments are important when assessing need. But what about individual strengths? My background is in neuroscience although I also work as an Assistant SENCo within my local school. I wanted to design a useful tool so assessing neurocognitive strengths would be easy for individuals without a neuroscience background. Once these are found then designing bespoke intervention becomes an easier task. While some neurodiversities can make certain tasks more difficult, they can equally be of benefit in other areas. Neurodiverse minds have a great many strengths and schools need various tools to help them recognise what they are for each individual. The NSC is a non-diagnostic tool that can help professionals working in schools identify where the neurodiverse strengths are for each individual student. Neurodiversity assumes everyone everywhere has neurodiverse strengths. The ethos behind the NSC is that it is down to each professional within every school to do everything reasonably possible to search for these strengths and attempt to develop them in a proactive and positive way in order to develop the students learning abilities. Interactive Behavior Contracts

►What’s Included?◄ You will receive: -5 fill-in-the-blank worksheets for students to choose a replacement behavior and reward to work for (in PDF format) ►How to Use◄ A behavior contract is a simple behavior management tool which utilizes positive reinforcement. Simply put, a behavior contract pairs positive behaviors that you would like to see your student perform with rewards that he or she can obtain when they engage in the positive behavior. A few tips on implementation: The positive behavior listed on the behavior contract should take the place of a negative behavior being exhibited by your student, and be stated in positive, goal-oriented terms. For example, a replacement behavior for students who have difficulties talking out of turn could be “I will raise my hand when I need to say something” instead of “I will not talk out of turn.” A replacement behavior for a student who engages in aggressive behaviors towards his or her peers could be “I will keep my hands to myself” instead of “I will not hit or pinch others.” Although the teacher should decide which specific behaviors to select for the behavior contract, allowing your student to offer his or her input regarding the rewards established by the contract will make the student more likely to abide by the terms of the behavior contract. If students do not abide by the terms in the contract, it could be that they did not play a big enough role in the creation of it. Picking an individualized reinforcement that incentivizes your student to engage in appropriate behaviors is key. A reinforcement survey, which can be purchased for $1.00 in my shop, is often helpful to determine what is most reinforcing for each of your students. Allow your students to color a single picture or move objects along a path each time they engage in the predetermined appropriate behavior. Every child will react differently to reward systems. Some children need very little incentive to perform appropriate behaviors, while others will need rewards delivered at a very frequent rate in order to alter maladaptive behaviors. When the latter is the case, teachers can alter the contract terms to make the goals easier to obtain. By doing this, students can obtain their rewards at a faster, more frequent rate. Once they demonstrate that they can consistently engage in the appropriate behavior, teachers can gradually increase the complexity of the replacement behavior or reduce the rate of reward delivery. ► Terms of Use ◄ This artwork is copyrighted by Roots To Growth. This resource has been created with hard to reach young people in mind. These resources have been used at The Island Project as part of vocational learning as a way of engaging young people who struggled with ADHD, Autism, SEMH and challenging behaviour. Most learners who attend our project are also struggling academically and therefore these materials are designed to allow tutors to scale the difficultly as desired. Differentiation is essential naturally with all sessions geared towards alternative learning for this criterion of young people. This project has been particularly successful when embedded with gardening sessions, ICT sessions as well as social skills building sessions. The idea behind this session plan is to encourage young people to explore and role play (optional) in an adventure just like Ash Ketchum the main character in the popular Pokemon series. Exploring the nearby nature find bugs and catch them with the intention of observing them and making key comparisons against Pokemon. Worksheets involve making posters and creating your own Pokedex to record your findings. Additonal challenges encourage young people to go above and beyond to achieve extra rewards. The beauty is not all young people have to enjoy Pokemon to engage in this session, being interested in bugs, mini beasts and insects in general is also perfect! This session will embed being outdoors, writing opportunities, computer skills development, research skills as well as social interaction.
