NATIVE AUSTRALIAN WILDLIFE ADAPT TO THE ENVIRONMENT OF THE SOUTHERN LOST CITY

NATIVE AUSTRALIAN WILDLIFE ADAPT TO THE ENVIRONMENT OF THE SOUTHERN LOST CITY

The dissected sandstone plateau of the Southern Lost City of Limmen National Park provide a distinctive habitat for a range of native wildlife. This unit has a focus on survival and adaptation to this area. The Limmen National Park was proclaimed in 2012 and research is in its early years. Those with an interest in the natural environment who ventured into the area when it was used as for cattle raising (pastoral leases) made lists of wildlife observed. In the environment within and around the Southern Lost City they began to record that certain native species were increasingly difficult to sight. Coinciding with these observations were the increasing sightings of intruding feral animals such as cane toads, feral cats and feral pigs. Their conclusion was that the feral intruders were having an affect on the survival rates of native wildlife by habitat modification and food resource reduction. Future research into this situation will shed further light on these impacts. Of particular concern were the reductions of 3 species covered in this unit. They have reached the "endangered" list and were heading for extinction within this area. Of particular concern were sightings of feral cats. Though not yet numerous in this park their numbers were likely to increase and their efficient hunting and killing skills would place native bird and small mammal species under threat. The feral cat situation is covered in another unit entitled "The feral cat menace - impact on Australian native wildlife". This unit can stand alone as an introduction to the impact of feral animals on native wildlife. It cat be used to introduce the topic of tha considerable problem caused by the increasing population and spread of feral cats which are regarded as the top predator affecting native Australian wildlife. That unit will also consider programmes carried out by the AWC (Australian Wildlife Conservancy) to conserve and protect native wildlife of Australia and avoid (if possible)adding names to the list of species that have become extinct. The worksheets (colour and black and white) are included so that hard copies can be distributed.

ANIMALEASE An Introduction to Music Making, Notation and Rhythm (With MP3 Audio)

ANIMALEASE An Introduction to Music Making, Notation and Rhythm (With MP3 Audio)

Music making should be fun, irrespective of age and ability. The purpose of this guide is to provide the foundations of rhythm that can be used in a variety of learning environments. It will introduce a person to musical notation using animal names that will already be familiar to them. It works by chanting the animal names in time to a given pulse. Linking this then to a group of written musical notes to sing, tap, bang, shout, or whistle. This is not a step by step guide and we encourage anyone who uses this book to develop their own ideas using the framework. No two Animalease sessions will be the same and nor should they be. Children often see this method as a game (this is completely fine), and as it uses information that they already possess, the pupil has less to think about. This results in a more relaxed performance and learning environment. The focus should always be on active music making (but ensure that it is always in time). We have found over the years of using this method that the vast majority of pupils would be able to perform the following information in a short space of time. Before using this method, many pupils thought that making sense of written music would be very difficult. Pupils already familiar with the conventional counting method also found it useful and, in many cases, preferred it. We feel that the use of the animal names not only helps the pupil but also makes it accessible for someone who may not be confident to deliver music lessons, making Animalease a great tool for many primary school teachers. This resource comes with MP3 Files for demonstration purposes. Enjoy! Steve & Ben

American Politics 'How to become the president of the United States' whole lesson Plan

American Politics 'How to become the president of the United States' whole lesson Plan

Resources to help students write a guide with the title ‘How to become the president of the United States.’ Attached is a powerpoint to show as a starter t the students and an extract from US Government and Politics for A Level by Anthony Bennett for the students to independently read. You can then ask them complete this as a written document, a PowerPoint or as a video. This needs to include: the constitutional (legal) requirements to be president. The extra constitutional requirements (things the candidate will probably need in order to stand a chance of getting elected.) Some examples of when candidates succeeded having broken the ‘rules’. A timeline for the key events in the election process – the invisible primary, primary and caucuses etc. and the dates when these occur. Names of the winning/losing candidates and their party in at least three Presidential elections. A paragraph on why the invisible primary is important, quoting some key names and statistics to support your argument.

WHY DIDN'T BURKE AND WILLS REACH THE GULF OF CARPENTARIA?

WHY DIDN'T BURKE AND WILLS REACH THE GULF OF CARPENTARIA?

In the early 1860’s the colonies of Victoria and South Australia were involved in a race to see which one would become the first to finance an exploration team to cross the continent from the southern ocean to the northern shores. Such expeditions would take explorers through the unknown arid interior and on to the savanna lands of the tropics. The Victorian expedition, led by Burke and Wills, was lavishly funded and well resources. It left months earlier than the South Australian expedition team led by Stuart. Residents in each of the colonial capitals waited for news of progress and hopefully achievement. Both expeditions faced considerable hardship. The Burke and Wills expedition gained more interest, probably due to the disasters encountered on the return journey south; the events of the dig tree and the death of Burke and Wills. Stuart, although badly affected by the journey returned to Adelaide without losing any of his party of seven. In terms of dates the Burke and Wills group reached the northern areas before Stuart but the debate developed about the technical issue of actually standing on the northern beaches. Stuart managed this but Burke and Wills, for various reasons, did not. This is a piece of Australian colonial history which answers the question. The debate about who can claim the “first crossing” continues. Take your students to camp 119, Burke and Wills most northerly camp where they will find some answers. A question and research page is provided as an attachment. Reference to the unit on Stuart is provided if you wish to delve further into Australian colonial history.

Thinking about the different ways we use water

Thinking about the different ways we use water

This resource is aimed at upper KS2 or lower KS3 and is part of a wider Rivers unit (see ‘Rivers - medium term plan’). The presentation asks children to think about all the different ways we use water and where we get it from. Are these uses necessary (needs) or luxury (wants)? Children then categorise these uses as commercial/industrial, agricultural, recreational or community. Lastly, they are asked to consider how we can balance human water requirements with those of Earth’s wildlife. In the activity children sort photos of different water uses into six different categories. The extension then challenges them to classify each water use as either necessary or luxury and explain their reasoning. If you like this resource, please review it. I will happily send you a free resource of your choice in return for a review or useful suggestions/feedback. Contact me at eddiebray@yahoo.co.uk

Lesson: Global Citizenship

****Global Citizenship - PSHE/Citizenship Lesson Whole lesson including PowerPoint and Worksheet Booklet (the worksheet is signposted in the PowerPoint) Useful for a PSHE/Citizenship lesson as allows time for reflection and discussion. May be useful for KS3 Geography. This resource would be useful for Year 9 onwards, depending on your cohort. There are comments for delivery in the PowerPoint notes section. Focus: what it means to be a global citizen a global citizen questionnaire allows students to reflect on their efforts to be a global citizen Trump v Obama and their respective attitudes to globalisation allows students to view global citizenship statements and quotations from a range of ‘famous’ people students write their own vision for global citizenship The students really enjoyed this when I worked through it with them; particularly the discussion about Trump!

Assembly: Bystander Apathy (The Choices We Make)

Assembly for Year 9 to 11. Can be adapted, depending on the time available. All instructions and guidance are in the Notes Section on the PowerPoint. Bystander Apathy Assembly (The Choices We Make) Includes: why do we, so often, focus on the trivial details in a difficult/dangerous situation. the value of teamwork (examples from Syria and USA) how we act in a tough situation and why gives a very simple explanation of Bystander Apathy the story of the Good Samaritan, accompanying prayers and reflection * *Note: This was designed for delivery in a Faith school but can very easily be adapted for non-faith schools by simply deleting the last 7 slides. If using in a Faith school, I have included the Parable and Prayers too.

8 Inspirational Colour Sketches

8 Inspirational Colour Sketches

These 8 lively, colourful pictures offer inspiration for story-writing, poetry-crafting, newspaper report inventing, and enhancement of the topics they reflect, which include: wild woods, migrating birds, ocean, sunset, jungle, wild animals (British and tropical), dragons, magic carpet rides, transport, myths and more. NB: I sketched and coloured the pictures by hand, adjusting them slightly with basic computer software, so expect spontaneity rather than professional artwork or machine neatness. I use them for all primary classes.

Feeling peg cards - emotional literacy. Autism / SEMH /SEN

Feeling peg cards - emotional literacy. Autism / SEMH /SEN

Cards giving a selection of situations, child uses a clothes peg to select the answer. Best laminated so resource is more durable. I use these with children who have autism but also suitable for KS1 or children with other SEN / SEMH needs. Can be used 1:1 or in a small group. Some of the answers I’ve had have surprised me, even when I know a child well - I’ve found this quite an interesting resource to get to know my pupils in most depth.

Thought For the Week - Full Academic Year Tutor resource

Thought For the Week - Full Academic Year Tutor resource

This resource is intended for full school role out and contains ten focus areas for tutors to cover with their form groups as a weekly tutor activity. Each session is intended as a 20-30 minute focus and is fully question based to enable discussion and exploration of a variety of areas. The focus areas are really effective tools for personal self reflection and focus heavily on growth mind set, learning from failure and developing self confidence. The resource is big on positive outlooks developing independence and accepting others. The resource covers the topics of Learning Failure How do you see the World Reflection Creativity Success Outlooks and Destinations Difference Independence Confidence The thoughts for each week are question and quotation based to enable students to reflect on a personal level. The slides are designed to be contemporary and where quotations and people are used, largely up to date examples and people who students are more likely to be familiar with are chosen. This means they range from Einstein to Eninem and Team GB to Green Day. Brief biographies are used to provide context if needed. Hyperlinks are made to articles and clips which can be used alongside the thoughts. Included in the download is a PDF for the full year to act as overview and 10 separate powerpoints to cover each unit.
