MEKONG DELTA SERIES - PART 2 LAND USES AND SURVIVAL

MEKONG DELTA SERIES - PART 2 LAND USES AND SURVIVAL

The Mekong delta ranks second in the list of the area of world deltas. The scaled map on the title page provides an opportunity for students to recognise the area (almost 100,000 square kilometres. This unit has a focus on the major land uses which are the basis for the survival of just over 18 million people. The main activity is growing the staple crop of rice. This is carried out by thousands of farming families on small areas. Rice is marketed within the delta but Vietnam is a major exporter of rice. Rice is milled within the delta and moved out of the delta via road to Ho Chi Minh City or by ship from the delta distributaries to overseas markets. Linked with the two large delta urban areas (My Tho over 800,000 population and Can Tho 1.4 million population) are market gardening areas producing a range of fruit and vegetables. These larger urban centres ara also areas of light industry.Vietnam also exports quantities of fish caught in the fresh waters of the distributaries or in the brackish waters of the mangrove swamps. Of particular significance is the raising of shriimp either in the water cannals and ponds of the rice fields or in the saline waters among the mangroves. The attachment is provided to promote class discussion. It could be handed out as a worksheet. This unit can standalone but it is also part of a series which, when completed, will give a broader understanding of this significant area.

Mackie's Dairy Farm: From Farm to Scoop || Understanding Food Miles and Their Impacts

This lesson aims for all students (2-6th grade) to understand the concept of food miles, how they impact our health and the environment. By viewing how Mackie's Dairy produces their ice cream from cow to scoop, students are able to see this process first hand. The lesson also allows for flexibility and creativity, providing opportunity for a taste test of local vs. store bought products, inviting a local gardener or farmer, and tracking food miles using math.

THE CASE OF FARMER PHY'S DISAPPEARING SAND ISLAND - MEKONG RIVER - CAMBODIA

THE CASE OF FARMER PHY'S DISAPPEARING SAND ISLAND - MEKONG RIVER - CAMBODIA

Rivers erode, transport load and deposit material. This is a study of a situation which illustrates the interrelationship between the Mekong River and the need for human adaptation the changing situations. To make the situation clearer this unit has a focus one one small sand island about 100 kilometres north of Phnom Penh - the Cambodian capital. Annual flooding from the Mekong River is embedded in the farming calendar and under normal flood levels farmers look forward to the time when flood waters cover some of their land. It brings the gift of added soil nutrients in the layers of sand and silt left on their land as the waters recede. However, for reasons explained, 2006 and 2011 brought more intense floods. The local farmers were given flood warnings as the Mekong floods entered the sand island areas. Many were evacuated and despite warnings there were casualties and significant damage. Join farmer Phy as he travels back to his sand island 6 years after the 2011 and see via maps what 2011 did to his sand island and his way of life. The attachment maps and the fill-in activity page are provided. Your students may well enjoy the journey to the island - but hopefully they will gain some understanding of farmer Phy's disappointment.

SAND ISLANDS OF THE MEKONG RIVER CAMBODIA

SAND ISLANDS OF THE MEKONG RIVER CAMBODIA

This is a study about sand - great quantities of sand supplied by the Mekong River and deposited within its wide reaches. It is about sand transportation, arrival, deposition and removal. The sand, with its high nutrient composition is regarded by Cambodian farmers as "the gift of the Mekong". Beyond the geomorphology of this sand is the way it affects the way of life of the Cambodians of the sand islands. The annual gift is usually manageable but in 2011 the Mekong flood levels were extremely high. Many from the sand islands were evacuated to higher/safer grounds. Even so, 2011 was considered to be a "disastrous year for many from the sand islands. Loss of life and considerable destruction of low-lying areas made this a year when the gifts of the river became overwhelming -particularly on sand islands that were severely flooded. To make this easier to understand you might consider linking this unit with one entitled "The Case of Chey Phy's disappearing island". Use the photographs to gain ideas about the way of life on the sand islands. "Step onto the islands" but have a care when near the sandy banks of the Mekong River because they are prone to collapse.
