Architectural Landmarks in Washington DC - Research & Creative Technology Project

In this lesson, students learn more about famous structures and landmarks in Washington, DC and the individuals who created them. Students choose the landmarks they will research and then choose the software they will use to showcase their research. Students can choose to create a presentation, a brochure, or a newspaper using Web 2.0 tools (free, no download needed) or by using Microsoft Office or Google Apps. For classrooms with limited technology, this lesson can be completed with students working in pairs or small groups. The completed presentations can be shared with the rest of the class if the teacher chooses. This is a great activity for a social studies or history class, or for a technology class. This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary grades or high school as well. ICT task - Ancient Egyptian Museum visit story - to improve writing by adding suspense

This is a suspense story about being locked in the Egyptian Gallery of a museum over night. This is a word document, so can be used as an ICT text for pupils. The pupils are instructed to improve and finish the story, using techniques (such as, adding description of the character's feelings, describing sounds and setting). There is a self assessment worksheet ( that proves far more effective than success criteria) and also detailed teaching notes.

Character Traits of Leaders - Research & Presentation Project

In this lesson, students identify leadership traits by researching leaders throughout history. They are provided with links to resources to help them research three individuals of their choice from three different time periods in history. Lists of leaders from each time period are provided to help them choose. Then, they use that information along with graphics, pictures and backgrounds from the Internet to create a finished presentation that explains the qualities of each leader, the similarities and differences, and add their own opinions and insights to the project as they learn how to apply leadership skills in their own life. Two versions of instructions are provided to allow the lesson to be done individually or in small groups or partners. Projects can be presented in class or included on a website for viewing. This is an excellent creative project to add to a unit in a career class, leadership class or to support a history/social studies unit. The project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be used with upper elementary or high school students. These resources are ideal for school E-safety Officers, computer science co-ordinators or primary class teachers, as they help to establish some basic e-safety guidelines and to create communication between home and school. 1. The newsletter is designed to be sent to parents of primary (KS1 & KS2) children, laying out advice for parents and explaining what the school aims to achieve in the area of online security. It has been written generically enough to be used by any school, but an editable Word version is also included. 2. ICT differentiated Secret Garden Mary Lennox character task using PEE, point, evidence and explain

Pupils are given the opening of Secret Garden and a grid giving clues to techniques used to show character. An example of the grid is below: Point - We find out about Mary Lennox’s character from what the narrator tells us directly about her. Evidence – I know this because it says… Explanation – This shows that… Working with the word document, pupils have to copy quotations from the text that prove the character points listed and paste them into the grid table. Next they fill in the table by explaining how their quotation proves the point. There are three sheets, differentiated for different abilities, requiring children who need more support to just fill in the section explaining how their quotation proves their point. There is a worksheet to show pupils how to work out clues to a character and an explanation of PEE (point, evidence, explain) the task can also be done on paper without a computer using the text. I asked the children to use three colours for the point, evidence, explanation.
