This assembly is aimed at Lower Primary age range and through it children learn about the Hindu Festival of Makar Sankranti or Uttarayan. If you are in India in January, you are likely to find yourself amongst clusters of kites in the sky and most probably flying one! It is usually celebrated on the 14th of January however it is not uncommon to see excited families practicing their skills on roof tops for several days before. The children learn about some of the foods and traditions associated with this Kite Flying Festival. IMPORTANT The license for using this assembly in your own class is £3, but if you wish to use this resource for a whole school assembly you will need to purchase the school license. Holi is an Indian Spring Festival which is now celebrated around the world. My presentation comes complete with a story about why this festival is important (you can choose between a long or short version), a description of what happens and lots of colourful pictures of the event. In addition, you are able to read the lives of two Indian children as they get ready for Holi and what they do on the day. These could be printed off and read individually or they could be projected onto the interactive whiteboard and read as a class. The students could then think about how they would like to celebrate the coming of Spring and who knows, perhaps even have their own version of Holi in the classroom!
