Get Your Hands Dirty: a guide to growing plants and keeping animals in schools

Get Your Hands Dirty: a guide to growing plants and keeping animals in schools

Get Your Hands Dirty outlines some of the potential for using growing plants and caring for animals in your school to enhance learning opportunities and raise standards. It has been written by people with many years of experience, all of whom have started small and progressed to keeping large farm livestock as their knowledge, skills and available resources have increased. This resource is useful for all teachers, whether you are thinking of starting to grow plants or wanting to start more complex activities. Whatever you are currently doing outside the classroom is already very useful for your pupils: be proud of anything you have achieved so far, and take inspiration from how others have been able to offer their pupils even more. This resource is aimed at helping you consider: • What you are currently providing in your school • What opportunities there might be for new activities • The issues you need to consider before embarking on a new venture • Where you can find more information and support.

Insect Identification; facts, pictures and labels.

Insect Identification; facts, pictures and labels.

Many schools are now building their own 'bug hotel' and exploring the bugs in their local school environment. This resource is designed to support these bug hotels and to encourage children to explore and identify a range of common creatures. Included is an insect identification grid which supplies the name and facts for a variety of insects - including ladybirds, bumblebees and slugs. There is another supporting document which is images of the insects with their label on the other side, which is perfect for EYFS and KS1. Children are encouraged to draw the insect to then identify it using the resources. The resources attached can hit a variety of science objectives across the primary settings, including habitats, identifying and observing.
