Magic Carpet Ride - display picture, hand-drawn

Magic Carpet Ride - display picture, hand-drawn

This serene scene will appeal to your children’s imagination, as they put themselves in the place of the happily gliding children. With the ocean, palm trees and setting sun below, and the soft, clear sky around them, this fantastical image will inspire your class to write, draw, discuss or enact the concepts conveyed. It could be used in combination with my magic mat poetry-writing sheet, for instance, available in my shop here. It will also brighten up a dark corner, of course!

The sea is - 3 graded Picture-Poem Frames, EY-Yr3

The sea is - 3 graded Picture-Poem Frames, EY-Yr3

These graded, sea-themed sheets are fun to write on, having wavy lines, plentiful illustration and simple starter phrases. The wavy writing lines, representing waves, encourage a relaxed, free-thinking approach, also highlighting the theme. There is also ample opportunity for colouring, with sea, sun, fish, bucket and spade, seaweed, boat, sand, sandcastles and shells to fill with colour. Prepare children for the topic with some sea-themed activities, such as a visit to the seaside, a sea-themed picture-book story, acting-out and photo-viewing. Build a word-bank as you go, focusing on describing words for the sea, such as ‘blue’, ‘wavy’, ‘cold’, ‘cool’, ‘warm’, ’ sparkly’, ‘fun’, ‘swishy’, ‘fresh’, ‘salty’, ‘splashy’, ‘deep’, ‘green’, ‘shiny’ and ‘magical’. The hardest sheet invites similes for the sea, shells and other items. These starter-lines could also be added (by hand) to the simpler sheets, for keen writers. Reading out and celebrating will build children’s confidence in their writing, and readiness for more. The sheets are hand-drawn and home-produced, and have been tried out with rewarding results in my school workshops.

Shells can be... Writing & Colouring Sheet + Guide

Shells can be... Writing & Colouring Sheet + Guide

This resource comprises two sheets: a writing and colouring frame and a guide for teachers. Both are black-and-white sheets in PDF format. The ‘Shells can be…’ writing and colouring sheet (or poetry frame) is designed for upper EYFS and lower KS1 emergent writers. The shells are hand-drawn, and represent various types and features. The opening phrase, ‘Shells can be’, invites descriptive words on the short, thick lines between the shells. The activity promotes literacy, while also offering creative colouring fun and a window onto the seaside environment. Suggestion for use: Introduce your writing and colouring activity by setting the scene first. Tell your group you’re going on a pretend trip to the seaside. Stretch arms out like the long beach and wave them like the wavy sea, making swishing sounds. Pretend to find a shell each, perhaps twinkling on the seabed or lying on the sand. With children in a circle, let them handle and inspect some real shells, listening to their hums and feeling their textures and shapes. Discuss how they look, feel and sound, drawing attention to their different patterns, bumps and curves. Ask who has seen shells at the seaside, or has one at home. Sky-draw the spiral shape of a twisty shell; stretch hands out to represent fan-shaped ones. The children will now be geared up to writing about shells and colouring the little shell pictures (as excitingly as they like!). Encourage able writers to add a simile to one word, such as ‘Shiny as …’ ( ‘a pearl’, ‘a mirror’, ‘the sea’…).

'Fish are...' Writing & Colouring Sheet + Guide

'Fish are...' Writing & Colouring Sheet + Guide

This resource comprises a writing/colouring sheet + a one-sheet guide for teachers, both black-and-white, PDFs. The fish-themed writing and colouring sheet - or picture poem frame - is a simple and attractive activity for EYFS. It offers a single line (at the top) for descriptive writing, with the starter words ‘Fish are’. The space below is filled with a large, hand-drawn scene of a patterned fish under the sea. The guide provides a list of relevant words to prompt for as needed, and two suggestions for extending the literacy aspect. The resource supports multiple curricular areas, in particular: Literacy, Expressive Arts & Design, Physical Development (fine motor skills) and Understanding The World. The attractive design has been proven to motivate young children to think up and try to write descriptive words for the fish, and to experiment with colours and pencil control. Enthuse children in the topic first, perhaps by showing pictures or videos of fish in the sea, looking at some in an aquarium, reading a story about a fish and enacting them together.
