Year 2 information text, 3 week non-fiction unit, planned and fully resourced, tourist attraction

Year 2 information text, 3 week non-fiction unit, planned and fully resourced, tourist attraction

Talk! Drama! Reading skills! Grammar skills! Games! Writing an information text! In this three week non-fiction writing unit, children look at an information text (a poster about the now destroyed Brighton Chain Pier). Then they play with the text and create new sentences of their own, developing key Year 2 grammar skills. Finally they create an information text of their own (Brighton Palace Pier), applying the skills taught in the previous two weeks. Every resource is included and most are resources are differentiated 3 ways - there’s a lot of work here! You could easily swap the model for an attraction local to you. You could also swap the outcome to an attraction near you - the skills in this unit are all transferable. Here are the objectives covered thoroughly across the three weeks: This unit revisits Y1 grammar: I can make up sentences. I can join my ideas using ‘and’. This unit introduces new Y2 grammar concepts: I can use commas for lists. I can use questions, statements, exclamation and commands. I can use expanded noun phrases to describe and specify [for example, ‘the polished stones’]. I can add a chunk (clause) using ‘and’ (coordination) This unit introduces the following Y2 terminology: noun, noun phrase, statement, exclamation, command, adjective, verb, comma This unit introduces these Y2 composition objectives: I can write an information poster. I can plan or say out loud what I am going to write about. I can use new words (vocabulary). I can write my ideas in sentences (continued from Y1). I can make improvements and changes with the teacher or with my friends. I can re-read to check that my writing makes sense. I can proof-read to check my spelling and punctuation [Are the ends of my sentences punctuated correctly?] I can read aloud what I have written clearly and with expression. Reading skills : I can spot meaning breakdown. I can repair a meaning breakdown. Enjoy!

Add Fractions with Unlike Denominators Dominoes

Add Fractions with Unlike Denominators Dominoes

This cut and go puzzle requires students to match fraction addition problems with the solution. No fraction sums will be greater than one. Some will need to be reduced. Use in centers, as individual or group practice or even in interactive notebooks to practice solving fraction addition problems. I have used many cut and paste activities throughout the years and noticed that some students struggle to get started. To help with this I have added the word “start” to the first domino and the word “stop” to the last. The first version (page 3) is ordered in the correct order by row, left to right. The letters on the dominoes are meant to help you quickly check for accuracy. The second version (page 4) is mixed up so that students who may be cutting up pieces before playing won’t know what the answers are. Pages 5 and 6 are the same except the word stop is omitted. Want students to record and show their work? Use the optional recording sheet on the last page.

Card Sort: Death Penalty - Arguments For & Against

Card Sort: Death Penalty - Arguments For & Against

The issue about whether or not society should execute convicted murderers is highly controversial. Recent polls still show a lot of popular support for the death penalty but Parliament still opposes its reintroduction. In countries where the death penalty does exist, a large number of those on death row are often people who are foreigners, outsiders or misfits. Black people make up 10% of US society but 30% of those on death row. Could this be due to racist judges and juries? This outstanding resources has been tried and tested in the classroom over many years and aims to help students understand some of the main arguments for and against the death penalty. It can be used as a starter, plenary or main activity to accompany any main stream text book or resource on this topic. The nature of the task means that it appeals to the full range of ability. The main activity involves getting students to cut out the cards in lesson, organize them into their most persuasive order and then sick into their books before they have a go at the extended writing activity / discussion. Alternatively, they can create a key and then sort through the cards and then stick the sheet into their book or you could cut out the cards and place them into an envelope for them to sort prior to a discussion on the topic. This is a great resource that can be easily adapted to suit your classroom and expectations. When you purchase this resource, you will be able to download a single page Word Document which contains a learning objective, instructions, two heading cards as well as sixteen statements that can sorted under them. The aims of this lesson / activity are: Theme: Moral Ethics and Philosophy Know: What is the death penalty? Understand: What are the moral arguments for and against the death penalty? Evaluate: Should society execute convicted murderers? WILF - What am I Looking For? Identify and describe - What is the death penalty? Explain - the moral arguments for and against the death penalty? Analyse - Should society execute convicted murderers? If you like this resource then why not check out my other resources on this topic in my TES shop. We aim to produce cheap and affordable resources for either the price of a good cup of coffee or a happy meal so that you can spend more quality time with the people who matter. Anyway, have fun and stay in touch via social media for the latest updates. Kind Regards Roy

Rosa Lesson Plans & Activities Package, Fourth Grade (CCSS)

Rosa Lesson Plans & Activities Package, Fourth Grade (CCSS)

This set of lesson plans, resources, and activities is for use with “Rosa” by Nikki Giovanni. It can be used for whole group, small group, and independent instruction – which makes these resources a smart choice for literacy centers or Reader’s Workshop. Here’s What You’ll Get and Why: My goal was to make it easy to teach readers how to think about “Rosa” using a variety of comprehension strategies. That’s why I’ve included page by page lesson plans, guided practice worksheets, and text specific reader’s notebook prompts for the following strategies: Retelling and Summarizing Making Connections Making Predictions Visualizing Understanding Text Structure I also created an Extension Activity for early finishers. Next, I find that vocabulary instruction works best when it’s done within the context of books that students are already reading. That’s why I’ve included the following vocabulary resources: Vocabulary Word List Flash Cards (match words to definitions) Interactive Vocabulary Notebook Cards Vocabulary Word Games Printable Personal Vocabulary Word Bookmark I’ve also included a word study lesson plan and set of activities, because, much like vocabulary, I find that word study works best within context. As a result, I have identified word patterns within trade books and have developed lesson plans and resources based on the word study that can be done with specific books. The lesson plan and set of resources for “Rosa” focuses on suffix -ed and includes the following: Lesson Plan Interactive Activity Practice Page Independent Word Work This set of resources also includes the following: Running Record Assessment Common Core Aligned Comprehension Assessment Answer Keys Common Core State Standard Alignment Spanish translation of the comprehension strategy practice pages, reader’s notebook prompts (complete with Spanish Common Core “I Can” statements), and extension activities for use with Rosa BONUS: Surprise Sample Resource I hope that you will enjoy using my resources along with your copy or copies of “Rosa” by Nikki Giovanni. If you have any questions about the resources included in this set please email me at AmyMackenzie@BookPagez.com. It will be my pleasure to reply and help you in any way I can.
