What does it mean to be resilient? Lesson Plan & Film

Students watch a short film, Everything is Incredible by Tyler Bastian, which tells the story of a Honduran man paralyzed from childhood polio and his fantastical commitment to creating a helicopter out of used and abandoned materials. In this lesson students explore the foundations of resilience and are encouraged to identify a source of creativity and perseverance resistant to the criticism of others. Reflective writing prompts are also included for students to demonstrate their understanding of the story. English and Spanish versions of the lesson plan are available for download.

Crowns with Attitude! An IB PYP Growth Mindset Activity

Crowns with Attitude! An IB PYP Growth Mindset Activity

The IB PYP Attitudes is a great growth mindset tool in itself as it teaches the children the attitudes of a learner and that everyone has the ability within themselves to have a postitive and successful attitude. This fun, crafty interactive activity can be used in a multitude of different ways. I like to use it as part of a growth mindset focus with the vocabulary and comprehension of the IB Attitudes being reinforced. Each crown has a space for the kids to write about how they have used or will use that particular attribute of a learner. Ideal for 1st -5th grades. UK & USA spelling. Suggestions for use: Reward attitudes as they are seen in the classroom Review the children's’ understanding of the Attitudes and have them select which one best suits them. Focus as a class on the IB Attitudes and the children can select their own crown. As a whole school award system for promoting the attitudes of a learner. Perfect for back to school as a getting to know you activity. This packet includes 14 different crowns plus teacher instructions and examples. If you like this activity, you may also be interested in my IB Learner Profile Crowns. You can many, many more ideas, freebies and PYP resources in my store and on my blog. Enjoy! Travel Literature & Composition

Travel Literature & Composition

Here are six pieces of writing about ‘Travel’, and six different writing assignments to go with them! Topics include: lyric poetry about travellers, describing the oldest known map of London, a traveller in Italy who is happy to arrive at her final destination, travel by sea from America to Europe, mixed feelings about a destination (by Nathanial Hawthorne), and travel by troika (sleigh) in a Russian winter. Writing assignments vary – from comparing and contrasting two poems, to writing a first-hand account of travel, to describing a map (included), to answering challenging questions about a text. An image of a pile of well-used suitcases is included (both in colour and in black and white) to be used as decoration on the student’s notebook. Literature & Composition collections are suitable for students who are ready to read and study different types of literature in small quantities. For example, instead of an entire novel or scholarly work, a small sample of each (which can stand on its own) will be presented. This way, the intermediate student has an opportunity to stretch their reading abilities without being discouraged. Each book contains six different writing samples that share a common theme. The writing assignments vary in length and are intended to inspire the student to try writing in different forms and styles.

Here are just a few examples of how I use them. - Student complete the Q's and draw in the pictures. -Hide them around the room and have students find them before introducing a new topic (Guess the topic?) - Matching up activity. Remove the words in red (Or keep them) Cut the topic cards in half and have students find the matching pairs. -Encourage students to come up with their own extra key term topic cards or extra sentence they can use to include several key terms. -Literacy support when writing essays. -Revision material before exams. - Have a set laminated and cut out at the back of the classroom in a box for Extension activities.
